If you have a little extra time each day, you can earn iTunes gift certificates through programs like Swagbucks.com and mPoints. I just bought my first boatload of donuts and paid entirely with gift cards I got through Swagbucks. It took several weeks -- I think I started saving right after Whacking Day, so end of May through beginning of July -- but it wasn't much effort. Just muted the computer and "watched" ads while doing other things online or watching TV.
