VR beta - discussion

So I think it would be good to start a new topic to discuss the VR implementation and experience. Maybe to find some help in the VR community.

I tried yesterday a few hours the VR beta.

HW: Valve Index, RTX 4080 S, SteamVR

Basic graphics: AA low, Anisotrophic Filtering 8x, Upscaler off

  • Settings most on low some like track and textures on high -> the performance for my more or less high end PC was ok
  • Track on high and ground cover off -> very stable and good looking track in gravel and asphalt (ground cover off remove flickering grass).
  • Flickering shadows -> Shadow are flickering even when standing and not driving (tried ultra low up to high) and used than low what was ok but flickering.
  • Trees have a very hard flickering even when standing and in the wet there is a white sparkling (looks a little like snow) in the trees which is also very hard flickering. I tried trees low to high also weather low to high but could not really solve this issue.
  • Scaling -> For me the scaling of the cars seems to be to large the steering wheel looks like 40cm -> will try to solve this with the SteamVR Scale setting

So the driving was really fun had a good experience but the flickering of the trees and shadows is terrible. I tried also DLSS but this was so muddy, for me not useable. I'm not sure which setting is able to counter this. Even with AA up to epic was not really a better experience it just tanks the fps.

-> Beta is not that bad, but the flickering is the point that makes it unusable for me. Means I will wait if there is something I need to change in the settings to remove the flickering and when it's not possible WRC will will collect dust on the virtual shelf.

What's your experience and are a few of you already starting to optimize the engine.ini?

    Do you have 32GB Ram?

    Try the built in adaptive resolution instead of the native or DLSS. For me DLSS is blurry just in the left eye, I bet that will be addressed later.

    What part of the image is flickering? Ground cover or other elements?

    I tried the engine.ini thing to reduce track brightness.

    One thing i've noticed is the cockpit is always very nicely rendered but all the exterior is ugly.

    Yes enough RAM no problem with RAM.

    In VR I will not use any upscaler or DLSS because it makes the image blurry - best would be a good AA algorithm without smearing over the image. In VR it's essential to have in the middle of the view as much details as possible.

    I've now work-a-rounds for my problems.

    The flickering in combination with the tree LOD and wet surfaces - some say shimmering -  is really the biggest problem. My work-a-round is, that I disabled the in-game AA and activated DLAA using commands in engine.ini - No the AA is ok it's nevertheless a little blurry (more than I like). Additional I set trees to Low.

    Brightness is also corrected with some engine.ini commands.

    Scaling was a slightly misaligned IPD, after readjusting it's now ok.

    So I can now play in VR with most settings on low and have my 4080 S hoovering around 80% - 90% in the stage. On the start line with extra lights at night and rain there are some framedrops to 86-88 but mostly stable at 90 fps.

    -> There is a lot of optimization in the game missing and it does not look very good. In comparison to ACC which is also UE WRC is really bad. ACC looks way better and the Nordschleife in ACC could also be a rally rack with the length, vegetation and asphalt. Even the rain looks so much better in ACC.

    Here the enigine.ini commands that I use (as I have written in some other threads).

    [/Script/Engine.RendererSettings]
    r.NGX.DLAA.Enable=true

    [SystemSettings]
    r.NGX.Enable=1

    r.DefaultFeature.AntiAliasing=0

    r.EyeAdaptation.LensAttenuation=0.45

    r.Color.Mid=0.6
    r.TonemapperGamma=2.2
