Constant crashes to desktop (DX12 only)

So since they made DX12 standard last season the game crashes directly to desktop every ~30 minutes. Without error message, just to desktop, no error log, nothing. Then I switched to DX11 and everything was perfect but the DX11 support comes to an end at mid season so I'm forced to switch to DX12 again. Switched today, tried to play and AGAIN. Crash to desktop every half an hour or every second game, I can't say exactly. But it's super annoying that this is still a problem.

What I've tried (without fixing the problem btw):

  • Reinstalling the game
  • disabling ful screen optimizations
  • running as administrator

Can't think of the issue being the FPS are too high because i play on VSync 100Hz. Either way I've tried to look the entire forum for a fix but it seems like very few players have that issue. Either way it shouldn't be my responsibility to look for a fix because this is YOUR game that makes problems when using anoter DX version. Just the fact that it was an issue since "DX12 is now standard" and still being an issue now makes me feel like the devs don't care at all. I don't want to quit this game after 3000 hours but if the problem still persists then I think I have to quit. I can't play a single ranked match without fearing that the game quits to desktop anytime.

My specs:

  • Ryzen 7 9700X
  • 32GB DDR5-6200
  • RTX 4070 SUPER
  • Win 11 24H2

Same with me, since they started with DX12 i've been trying it and it has always been crashing to desktop just before playing for an 1hour for me.

I would switch back to DX11 and get no issue.

Then they would release updates and patches and I would try DX12 again, but again crashes at the 1 hour mark of playtime.

I am back on DX11 and here I will stay until they remove it as an option, after that I can only hope the issue gets fixed.

    My specs:

    • Ryzen 7 5700X
    • 32GB DDR4-3200
    • RTX 3070
    • Win 11 24H2
    • Game Installed through Steam on a 1TB NvMe

Meka868Ok so I'm not the only one. I've done some research and found some people with the same issue. Not a lot but more than enough. I just can't think of anything on my side which causes the issue. I built the PC at the start of the year and was fine until the start of last season where they forced DirectX12 as the new standard for Apex. Before that it would run perfectly, DirectX11 tho. It's a new PC with almost the newest parts so I can't imagine anything being the problem with DX12 because it runs perfectly on DX11. I really don't understand. Tried a lot of "fixes" from YouTube today but still crashed after 45 minutes.

But honestly it's not my responsibility to find a fix for this. It's their game that's not running stable on brand new PCs. Also I don't have any Antivirus or anything else running so my operating system is vry very clean. I'm honestly puzzled...

    Hey folks,

If you're seeing regular crashes in DX12, please take a look at the workarounds here.

This is something we're looking into, though in the meantime these steps have helped others to varying degrees and may be worth a look.

Thanks for giving those a shot and hanging in there!

Yea, at first I thought it was my 8Gbs of VRAM running out, but I monitored it a couple of times and it never even reaches close to filling the buffer.

So, ive decided to just play on DX11. With DX12 the only thing that avoids crashes mid game is for me to just restart Apex before the 1 hour mark, luckily Apex starts up pretty quick so its just a minor annoyance.

But still, they really need to fix this

I got a better idea, re enable directx11 support and fix the god damned problem!!! Absolutely no reason to disable directx11 support when ypu KNEW 12 was broken!  It's now may 7th and its STILL happening on season 25!

Windows LTSC 2019-2021-2024 all made Apex crash midgame for me . Regular Win 10 Pro. the one from today does  the trick. make sure to edit windows firewall for  the easyanticheat software and apex itself.

firewalls are all set but this is a known directx12 issue nothing to do with anything else, and i run win 11 im not downgrading to play one game they need to fix the issue, but in typical EA fashion theyre incompetence knows no bounds, all they had to do was leave in directx11 support until the problem was solved, there was no reason to stop support when they had known issues.

its dx12 that  does  not work with something on   our  win 11 build.  Make  a multiboot setup. Just download the  ISO WIn10 PRO   from  the Microsoft website  using there tool.  Use Rufus  to burn it to USB DRIVE using settings below:  then go to BIOS. Boot. Choose USB Drive as 1st boot device. reboot. Install it on  second hdd.    If your PC does  not make it a multi boot setup automatically  use EasyBCD to make a multiboot.  EASYBCD is free to use and easy.

But in the end  gaming is a waste  of time.   Maybe this is a  sign to  go outside. Dont  want  to push  you. Gl in   everything. Bye.

  • edit it also crashes  on the win10 pro build. please  reply in  the future if you have a fix!

No More Crashes with my system.

This problem has actually stopped happening for me. I believe it was tied to some Nvidia driver issue when mixed with DX12, because i reverted all my settings to default at the driver level and its never happened since.

Meaning, settings like 'Power Managment Mode' is set to 'Normal' and not 'Max Performance' in the Nvidia App nor Nvidia Control Panel.

Note that I had no issues previously with the settings how I had it, so its still a problem that DX12 raised. The problem was also happening for me with another DX12 online service game and those crashes stopped as well. So the problem was actually with the Nvidia driver in some way, because the crashes came out of the blue after working fine previously.

Hope this can help someone else, as I said the crashes after the 1hr mark has totally stopped happening for me and I get no issues on DX12 with Apex and the other online service game I play.

    My specs:

    • Ryzen 7 5700X
    • 32GB DDR4-3200
    • RTX 3070, fully updated with latest drivers
    • Win 11 24H2, fully updated
    • Game Installed through Steam on a 1TB NvMe
