While you're not getting the same error, it sounds like same root cause for this issue is causing the situation you're running into.
Are you and the friend that can group up able to queue for any matches at all? Is the other friend able to actually queue?
This sounds like either the two of you or the separate friend is on an incorrect version. If you're able to queue normally otherwise, it's likely to be the other friend. They'd want to take a look at the link above to give that a try, or keep an eye out for further updates there.
