A quick recap of matchmaking:
- early seasons when game became playable (till season 12) matchmaking was limited to 1.5 or 2 (didn't really matter) tier limits. Still you rarely saw low plat players in Diamond lobbies. Diamonds 4/3 played almost exclusively vs Diamonds and Diamond 2/1 started to see Masters/Preds in their lobbies.
Pros: lobbies as per rank were super consistent
Cons: due to demotion protection (basically if you reached D4 and then lost 100 games you still remained in Diamond 4) at least half of Diamond 4 were actually Plat level players so you kinda got the same thing as now aka low skill players masked as Diamond 4 instead of Plat/Gold.
Games were super competitive in Diamond, it was very hard to get out of Diamond 4 without a premade 2/3stack
- at some point Respawn started to give away ranks, make ranks easier, your time of bronze to pred runs by streamers, itstimmy stat farming games etc.
I think they made tier difference of 2 now and basically ranked lost any validity, became pub like for most, your free to take Master seasons were there - season 12-20? including ones where Respawn tried to emphasize placement and eventually ended up giving Pred ranks to people who just rat every game 24/7 and progress because they spend more time in the game
- Pros/Streamers cry about them having to play "ALGS like" games all the time + queue times still being too long -> Respawn feeds low Diamond, high plat and sometimes even Gold players to Preds while limiting number of Pred/Master teams per lobby. Makes it obvious via player rank bar at the loading screen -> changes that to show just "highest rank player per team" instead so people would not clearly see that there are like 1-3 Pred 3stacks vs randoms.
Add hackers over time and you have current situation.
If you ask me I would opt for early matchmaking and rather get hardstuck in Diamond playing actually good Diamond players vs feeding Preds and hackers or feeding on Golds.
At this point ranked is cemented not as competitive mode but pubs version where people can't leave instantly after dropping fragment / can't drop into 10 squads because of drop zones (only change Respawn should be credited for in ranked). Otherwise it is still hell for soloq players.
And most importantly matchmaking is tailored towards noncompetitive casuals who hoard ranked badges and pros/streamers who keep the game alive, money coming in not to ranked grinders who don't spend money on the game :)
p.s. overall I would say if you are average ranked grinder duo-stacking for some reason is the most balanced at the moment = you get your share of Preds and hackers but overall it seems like similarly skilled soloqers and some 3stacks playing vs you. Some fights you can win 2v3 due to coordination, some fights you will lose to 3stacks that are equally coordinated just 3 instead of 2 (highly dependable on your 3rd random and his/her will to teamwork).
3stacking as Diamond basically feeds to you mostly hackers and Preds/Masters for some reason. Games are noticeably harder almost to a point of impossible to bridge the skill gap - you just get obliterated, demote, go back to lower level lobbies that you mostly win with ease to go back up. Similar to early season soloq experience.
Soloq - easy till D4, almost impossible between D3/2, only super gifted can get to masters soloqing without cheating and that will not be good experience as most games you will just rat out for placement.
