Controller configuration sometimes requires irrelevant controls to be defined

When manually configuring a controller (i.e. when it hasn't been automatically detected) I have to input controls settings for steering, pedals and gear shifting, even if it's not relevant to the device. I've been testing this on a PC based sim rig which uses a Simucube steering motor, a steering wheel (gear shift paddles) from a different manufacturer and pedals from another manufacturer. The only one that automatically detects the configuration is the Simucube motor.

Therefore, when manually configuring the pedals I'm required to configure controls for the steering and gear shift even though these controls are irrelevant for that device. If I don't configure these then I can't seem to save the settings for the pedals that I've configured, because it says that I need to configure the other controls that aren't relevat for the device. I have managed to work around this issue by putting the irrelevant controls on the backspace button on the keyboard (which it seems to let me do), but this means that there are multiple ways of triggering the other controls. The issue is analogous for the steering wheel gearshift and is also a problem for a H-Pattern gearshift that's connected to the sim rig (for use in other games). Can you provide a way of manually configuring a controller which doesn't require inputs that are irrelevant for the particular control device please?
