Player switching is not functioning as described

I have setup "Next player  switching" to "Closest to ball" which described as them is "While defending press L1 to switch to next-best available player on the pitch. Closest to ball: This setting favors players who are closer to the ball"  

It does not work for me. I have it setup and still when I press L1 it takes the player in the direction of my LEFT STICK which is WRONG if we read what they described that SHOULD happen.
