AI Defending

No matter the formation or the tactics, my holding midfielders never stay back while I’m attacking and never track back on counters, and essentially are useless going forward and in defense. My fullbacks are just as bad, no matter what I do. While defending my fullbacks will run away from the player they are covering and just allow him to run in behind. I understand defending being more manually controlled this year but that doesn’t explain why the players are clueless and useless.
