Pressing O/B in the middle of a flip trick causing dark cathes

Im doing my weekly task for the previous week where I need to score with no foot grabs(I dont do these often cause they dont excite me) I’ve noticed today while trying to do them that if I do a flip trick into said grab and input the grab early (before the flip trick finishes) I will get a dark catch and completely bail or just not get the grab im going for. Im certain that im not pressing R1/RB, I even tested it by itself to make sure I wasnt tripping but its extremely frustrating trying to do this task when Im getting tricks I dont want to do and have never had an issue with before.
