Yup, same for me. I've never been able (so far) to 3 star the Tier 3 level. So, I have to do it manually. I've got to the last stage 3 times today, like the OP and it's frozen (not just loss of buttons) each time.
I too am a bit miffed with over an hour of wasted time. Playing this game is getting more and more of an exercise in 'bug dodging'.

Same issue. Playing in an iPhone with sound and effects on.
I never play with sound. However...
Turning off audio and sounds worked for me(turning off!, not sliding volume to zero!)
I slide the volume to zero. So, I'll take back the 'I tried it without sound' comment.
