I can figure out how to use them, they appear in a tab under the characters but I am unable to use them on my characters.

Do you have any yet? There's one at the end of the episode track. Bronze for ftp, silver for p2w. I'm unsure how you get them otherwise. I do see what you mean though, it does appear like we were gifted on of each, gratis.
