Sim can't eat baked goods unless "call to meal" on NPC

My Sim is working on her baking skill. When she makes any homemade baked goods, and I ask her to grab a serving, she won't. She just stands in front of it with no action, then leaves to go do something else. I put the baked goods on every possible table and surface, and there are no obstructions. When I put the homemade baked good in the fridge, she can't retrieve it as "get leftovers".
I figured out that she can ONLY eat a homemade baked good if a NPC Sim is over, and the baked good is freshly made, and she does the "call to meal" action on the NPC. Then they both can eat it.
If the baked good had been in the fridge and I put it back on the counter, no one can eat it.
If the NPC Sim leaves and there is still the baked good sitting on the counter or table, my Sim suddenly can no longer eat it. So I have to put it in the trash.
This is ONLY happening with homemade baked goods. Other homemade food works fine and she can eat alone. 
So eating homemade baked goods appears to be a group activity?
Does anyone else have this problem? (I have no mods)

What's the point of a baking skill when there is such a restriction?
