Sims won't take plate from family recipe group meal

I made a new family recipe and used the heartbreaker option. I put the plate on the counter and the table, neither time would my sims get a plate of food. I tried call to meal and that didn't work either. The action will cue them disappear. I can have them eat leftovers from the fridge just fine though. Have not tried just a regular group meal yet.
