Midsummer Studios’ Life Simulation Game vs. Sims 5 (Rene)?
Jake Solomon is a gaming industry veteran responsible for Marvel's Midnight Suns and the modern XCOM franchise. In March 2023, it was reported that he left 2K's Firaxis studio in February after 23 years. (XCOM’s Jake Solomon is forming a new studio and ‘likely won’t make a turn-based game’) He stated: XCOM director said he would likely make a simulation title, rather than another turn-based strategy game. “My intention, if anybody gives me the funding for it, is to open my own studio locally and make a new kind of game,” he said. “I can’t move too far away from what my experience is. I’m a creative director, but the truth is I’m actually a very in-the-weeds system designer. “I make games as a creative director but I actually end up designing a lot of the systems for the games. Even on Midnight Suns, I had some amazing designers but I ended up designing individual heroes, enemies and their abilities… “System design is important to me, so I want to make a systems-based game. I think it won’t be turn-based strategy… I want to make something that’s more of a life simulator or a simulation-style game. That’s the plan.” In December 2023, Rock Paper Shotgun reported a new interview with Jake Solomon ("Jake Solomon uncut: here's our post-Firaxis GDC interview in full") Some excerpts: You mentioned that you were quite excited by the idea of a life sim game. What life sims have you played over the years? What is it about them that you enjoy? There's a number of things that appeal. Without talking specifically about what it is I want to do, I think that the appeal of life sims is kind of manifold, but I think that, one, it's just life in miniature, right? From model train sets to doll houses to army men, there's something about life in miniature that I think is just naturally appealing. And I think the power of having the life that you want? You think like, 'Oh my gosh, simulating life, like, I already have a life and that feels like enough work!' But being able to have a different life and a life you want, I think it's really, really appealing. Is it those stories that emerge from within the simulation that get you fired up? Yeah, I think that everything feels original, there's a lot of procedural-ness to it, right? And then everything feels original to you because it's procedural. And when it feels original, it feels authentic. And it feels shareable. Even if it's just turning to your partner and saying, 'You're never going to believe what just happened!' Whether it's Dwarf Fortress, or whether it's The Sims or whatever it is, simulation can create some really fun experiences. Now that you're looking more towards the live sim genre, has there been a lot of iteration in it in from your point of view, or is there still room to do something new? Well, Paradox and Ron Humble just did a really neat . I mean, I thought that that take on that straight up life sim was unique. It's interesting to look at. There's a lot of village simulations, right? So I don't know if it's pejorative yet but cosy games, right? There's a sim-ish nature to that even down to Stardew and things like that. And then to see something like Dwarf Fortress go from ASCII to actual graphics and then seeing how popular that is, I think that there's been iteration. But definitely to me, I see an opportunity. Best EA Community! The Sims is an amazing game and as a creative outlet, even when playing against/with NPC's. But I think that a comprehensive but smooth multiplayer experience would really change the gaming experience altogether... Designing and building a house that you can show off to real humans (as they visit it with their own Sims character) would really make it way more enjoyable. And of course to experience all the other interactions with other humans! Now I want the game to be just as comprehensive as when playing Single Player Mode, but with Multiplayer Mode! For instance if one player selected Fast Forward Mode, then the other players would get notified. And if all players selected Fast Forward Mode then the game would fast forward, until one player disengaged it. Ya reporté por BUG REPORTS pero dejo por aquí también por si sirve de algo. Desde la última actualización mi juego se queda congelado a los pocos segundos o minutos(a veces varía) cuando pulso el butón de velocidad o incluso desde que lo inicio. Al principio pensaba que era por los mods y CC, pero teniendo en cuenta que ya los tengo actualizados y los que todavía no disponen de update están fuera de la carpeta MODS, opté por probar a jugar sin todos estos por si el problema era algún conflicto con ellos. SPOILER: Sigue dando fallo a los poco segundos Espero que se pueda solucionar pronto ya que es frustrante que el juego se quede congelado sin dejarme seleccionar ningún sim ni clickar nada, mucho menos guardar-tengo que forzar el cierre del juego constantemente, a veces el cierre forzado tampoco responde y tengo que optar por reinicar el ordenador-. So I was reading EA basically confirming the rumors in PR speak about what is likely Project X. I would like to make a few suggestions for the upcoming project. Presuming it will be a Sims 4 replacement (which is still undetermined) I have my wishes, which I made into a magnum opus post about a year or so ago. I'll give the abridged list. I would love to suggest a feature for both The Sims 4 and Project Rene regarding fairies. In The Sims 4 , there are already temporary effects where Sims shrink and become very small during certain actions or animations. I think it would be amazing if fairies could stay permanently mini-sized instead of shrinking only temporarily. Having fairies that are always tiny would feel more magical, more immersive, and more true to fantasy lore. Fairies are traditionally small creatures, and allowing them to remain mini-sized permanently would make gameplay feel more authentic and special. Ideally, this could be: A permanent trait or life state option A toggleable setting for fairy Sims Or a gameplay choice the player can decide This feature would add creativity, realism, and uniqueness to fairy gameplay and would be a wonderful addition to both current and future Sims experiences. Llevo muchos años jugando a Los Sims, y me encantaría poder llevarme a los sims conmigo a todos lados donde me he llevado la nintendo y no solo en casa, en mi caso, en el ordenador. Me gustaría poder irme de viaje y poder jugar por ejemplo. Además que pasaría más tiempo jugando porque es mucho más cómodo en una consola portátil. Even if you want to claim that you dont want The Sims to be just like real life, thats cool and that isnt the point. That isnt really the argument im making here either. Its about just how little effort has been made to actually make the games an immersive and fun experience. In sims 3 there were imaginary movie theaters. And our sims would disappear inside to have popcorn and watch movies on the big screen while you waited outside. And Imaginary diners where sims would teleport to their booths and have all this pretend food and you would imagine them being inside and having this great time.There were also Imaginary spas, where your sims would go to treat themselves to saunas and back rubs, but you couldnt get a peek inside. And make believe sports arenas where sims sat back with hot dogs and refreshments and watched games you could never see. And even imaginary tombs at the graveyard where sims would go inside and become spooked by something scary. But you had to imagine what it might be. I think that so far, the sims games have failed to be proper life simulations at all. And if Sims 5 is more of the same, what is the incentive to shell out the money for it? After I have already invested literally hundreds of dollars on Sims 4 and if you combine Sims 1,2,3 and 4 over the years thats well over $1000 of content just to be able to do the same stunted imaginary play in each new game. Rabbit holes, should be optional, for those who want less .But those of us who dont want to imagine and pretend our way through a game that calls itself a life simulation, we should have the chance to play a game where all of the activities can be actively participated with by the player. And OPEN to us. In sims 4 it has been announced that one of the new water activities it just a rabbit hole. Why is it that we are still being forced to play in such a closed off manner? You have those who dont mind rabbit holes and thats okay. But what if I dont want just another building shell to run off too. It should not be on me the player, to imagine things. I dont want that, I want to be a part of the gameplay. I need more for Sims 5 in order for me to actually buy it, because im not buying a 5th title for the same tired and rehashed experience. There is honestly no reason to even create a new title , if you're not going to innovate and expand to new heights you've never before reached. Us original simmers are getting older now.
