CG: "The Vanguards are a collection of Jedi we felt were (or would have been) stalwart defenders of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant."
vanguard (noun)
1) a group of people leading the way in new developments or ideas
2) the foremost part of an advancing army or naval force
CG, this word doesn't mean what you think it means.

Perhaps it is a typo and should read Jedi Van Guards. They hang in the van on lookout while others do whatever mission is required.

I assumed they meant leading the counterattack during Order 66

The Vanguard should be the ~200 Jedi who went to Geonosis to save GK, JKA and Padme based on what the word means lol

Maybe in a sense that when they are not actively engaged in combat they were designated to defend Jedi Temple of Coruscant - like they were tip of a spear in offensive actions and elite guardians when not in active combat

Yeah, they're not the ones left behind to guard the van. The van guard. They're the folks who drive the van right into enemy territory.
