Because every game is different. SWTOR is using a pretty rare engine that was modified extensively, so it can create really unique problems.

Thanks! I will try that. Though I do have a question- Why does this happen only when I'm playing SWTOR? I have other games that I play too and they don't have this issue.

Would it be wise then for me to talk to MSI about creating a driver that is optimised for SWTOR?

They won't. Because 1) too few customers and 2) Nvidia/AMD create the drivers
I would of said this game is a very good stress test on the cooling system, hence why I suggested check temps.
It will increase temps more then most other games, this isn't a fault, except possibly with cooling, if heat is causing issues.
- alberteje6610 years agoNew ScoutWell I swapped out my new AMD cards for my old nVidia one. I checked the temp and it managed to stay at 66°C with the game playing.
Thanks for the suggestions, I did try them all. I suspect I may have to take the GPU back and perhaps get an nVidia one. I wouldn't be mad, as nVidia is old reliable but is too bad as this one is good. You could RMA that card for an identical replacement, use the below error report as justification, especially if swapping the card out things are good again.
I gather the PSU was of sufficient size for the change of video cards

PSU is at a perfect size. It's 2 years old, ~450W. Don't smell any smoke or anything from it when I run my computer. No mini-explosions.
- alberteje6610 years agoNew Scout
I'll do just that. The card, given the specs, should be MORE than capable of playing SWTOR. So something is messed up with it. I will RMA it and see about getting a replacement.
Anyone know the polcies for MSI with regards to a warranty besides it is 3 years? Do they just replace it? Replace it with what?
Was thinking more voltage drop on load this can cause games to fall over
but 450w should be ok , that card has a max draw of 110w by memory, without knowing what other load you have.
Edit - replacement is one for one so they will give you the same card back

Good to know. Will it be a brand new card or just a refurbished one? Or is that more the cell phone industry in Canada?
MSI do refurbished by memory

Hello, i meet the same problems, and ONLY in SWTOR
I did all the things listed below its NOT about our hardware.
Please give a way to fix it, or fix the game to stop it. Its only SWTOR so your responsability. BTW i'm a premium player so i pay for a service.
I use a GTX 770 Phamtom Gainward card. Max temp is 50°...
- alberteje6610 years agoNew Scout
If that's true, it has to be a problem with those drivers. But it's only happening with certain cards.
I'm gonna test it with my older nvidia card. Did you try it with an older graphics card?
- Anonymous10 years ago
no problem with my 980
but i have no problem with all other game with my 770, only SWTOR
If the Nvidia 980 is fine but the 770 isn't this makes it a NVidia Driver issue , maybe post here
- Anonymous10 years ago
Ok then turn it to the other way ? :
770 is working nicely on ALL GAMES 100% of time but NOT IN SWTOR ?
The way your game react to each graphic cards can be different, and not ALL players have the same issues than us.
Its seems like BTW that we are A LOT to have these graphical problems (kernel) 😉 ONLY in SWTOR.
Please be responsable and try to help ... Witch option should i have to switch ingame to be able to play with no bug ? When the problem will be solved ? Thank you
If your after help from bioware email support@swtor.com
My view is if it is a game crash with a particular card model like the evga 980 as per here and was proven to be clock speed issue and corrected with firmware update
Best suggestion is post here and provide the requested information. Swtor is a Direct X 9 game and as such if an issue with playing a directx game if it isn't file related or the crash point isn't at the same point for everyone , example the old esselles crash point that affected everyone it isn't likely game related per sey
If you can plug the 980 in and everything is fine , but you plug the 770 in and it isn't then it points to the Nvidia driver (or the card) as the game and directx usage hasn't changed

Thanks for your answer, you kept your calm even if i was a bit aggressive, this problem take my nerves off, when it happen, i have to restart my computer, graphics are totally * :x
Any issue is frustrating , I haven't seen many with issues with a 770 , 970 and 980 seem to crop up a bit and majority are evga cards unfortunately
not sure what to suggest with the 770 given the 980 is working fine in the same system ?
Have you tried DDU to remove all trace of the video driver and do a clean install , just in case it is affecting the 770 for some reason.
Edit - in case relevant and given swtor heats up a system nicely there is this report of a 760 remaining on max frequency with the latest drivers , that may cause some cards to crash due to heat
- Anonymous10 years ago
There is no problem about heat, my GPU never overpass 50°c.
I did use DDU to remove all driver before installing it again.
My display software crash really randomly. with no particuliar reason, no heat, just in game while playing ☹️
Edit : Its not an EVGA, it's a Gainward
Edit2 : i've read something intresting : the issue car happen if used with windowed GSYNC, i'll try to play in Full screen GSYNC and activate GSYNC only with fullscreen.
- alberteje6610 years agoNew Scout
That's EXACTLY my issue with my AMD. It plays other games fine, even with playing SWTOR the temperature goes as high as 66, stays as low as 60. SO... yeah, hard to say what to do here.
- Anonymous10 years ago
BTW nothing worked, so i just stopped my Premium acc and uninstalled the game, because i'm bored
Too bad, i really like to play SWTOR.
i can confirm : no Kernel crash since 3 days playing other games
