[MAC] Camera controls not working as expected

Hello,

I'm running The Sims 4 on a Mac Studio (Ventura 13.2) and the camera controls feel very sluggish and glitchy. I've attempted repairing my game and playing without mods but nothing has worked for me.

I've attached two video examples demonstrating the problem:

  • CAS - https://youtu.be/ldOWbDDgl8U
    • In CAS, the camera & sliders need an unusual amount of force to move them and it sometimes ends up going the opposite way making it very difficult to create Sims.
  • In Game - https://youtu.be/fdiI9Z66wl8
    • In cinematic camera mode, if I press W to move forward and move my mouse even just a little bit, the camera starts tilting up.

I've found a thread with similar symptoms to mine, and it says the problem was solved in a patch but it doesn't seem to be fixed on my end.

Solved: CAS, Build mode, live mode camera being weird - Answer HQ (ea.com)

Thank you for your time.

Product: The Sims 4
Platform: Mac OS Ventura 13.2
Which language are you playing the game in?: English
How often does the bug occur?: Every time
What is your current game version number?: 1.95.207.1230
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed?: All of them

Steps:

How can we find the bug ourselves?:

  • CAS: Click and drag facial/body features around. Move it in all directions.
  • CAS (Camera): Click and drag to rotate the Sim around in CAS. Move it in all directions.
  • Tab mode: Press WASD to move camera and aim using the mouse.

What happens when the bug occurs?:

  • CAS: A LOT of force is needed to click and drag facial features, mostly vertically. Sometimes it goes in the opposite direction than expected. There's a bit of a delay where the cursor doesn't move after facial features are dragged.
  • CAS (Camera): Odd resistance in dragging. Camera sometimes doesn't respond, and sometimes it responds too much.
  • Tab mode: Camera tilts upwards as you move the mouse around.

What do you expect to see?:

  • CAS: Much more responsive to mouse movement.
  • CAS (Camera) Much more responsive to mouse movement.
  • Tab mode: Camera moves in the direction of the mouse.

Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods?: Yes, but for testing purposes I took them out.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system?: No
Please describe the patch or change you made.: N/A

Note: My Windows version of the game (same version + set up) works exactly as expected.

Thanks! How about if you use the < and > keys to spin the Sim in CAS, is it smoother? When you grab and hold to change leg shape for example, is that when it sometimes changes to the opposite direction? Is this all the time or only some of the time?

In BB or Live mode, can you use the up/down/left/right arrow keys instead of letter keys?

Which keyboard and Trackpad/Mouse are you using?

Yeah the < and > keys work fine in CAS. Using the arrow keys in tab mode produces the same results as using WASD.

I would say the controls go the opposite way some of the time. The resistance with clicking and dragging is a bigger problem because it's borderline impossible to move facial features around the way you want to. I'm using an MX Master 3 mouse to play.

I wonder if this is a result of some "optimizations" they may have done to make playing with a trackpad easier considering most Mac users use a trackpad. Just wish there was an option to turn it on or off.

Maybe, can you get your hands on an Apple mouse or Trackpad to test? I only use Trackpads on my Macs and not had these issues but as you can see in the thread you helpfully linked to, it was an issue in the past.

Do you have an older Intel Mac you could test on too?

I see... I don't have access to either of those, but maybe I can make use of Apple's return policy and get one to test it. 🤔

I used to own an Intel MacBook Pro a few years ago but I don't remember the experience being great either.

Have you played the game on a Windows machine by any chance? I used to primarily play on Windows until I recently switched to a Mac and there is a noticeable difference (for me at least) in how the click and drag controls work.

Yep, my iMac is Boot Camped and has the game installed. I use the trackpad there too and can’t tell the difference in CAS. It was a weird issue before too because it didn’t affect every Mac user. There must be a common link but we never figured out what it was although a patch did seem to fix it. Maybe it was a fix for something else that improved the performance? Or maybe it coincided with a macOS update?

I’ve moved your thread to the bug forum as it may be a game problem. Be good to see if it can be fixed again 🙂
