Re: EA Cuts Jobs at Respawn: 670 Jobs Lost

@Xubunnytwo

Your title for this post is a bit misleading.

Her is a bit more inclusive news piece of what is likely going on and in it https://nordic.ign.com/apex-legends/79420/news/respawns-star-wars-fps-is-canceled-but-work-on-next-jedi-game-black-panther-and-iron-man-will-contin

Quoting the news article:

"EA is focusing on in-house franchise such as Apex Legends in a pivot away from "future licensed IP."

IGN understands that EA intends to reorient its business and development plans to focus on a handful of its biggest franchises, including EA Sports, Apex Legends, Star Wars: Jedi, Iron Man, Black Panther, Battlefield, Need for Speed, Dragon Age, Skate, and The Sims. IGN also has learned that a team is still working in pre-production on the next Mass Effect, though Bioware's current focus remains on Dragon Age."

I think it is safe to say, Apex is safe.

    1+1

    Fortnite/Epic Games announcing a big coop with Disney (Star Wars, Marvel, cartoons etcetc). https://youtu.be/Yf2bRcSIUsE?si=3_utE2RNxmc9r5Yl

    EA focusing on in house stuff and cutting jobs.

    Looks like they lost account/licensing deal and had to cut jobs because of it.

    Understandable and sad situation. But could also mean Apex gets more interest inside the company => improvements on the game (or even better Apex 2.0 done correctly from the start 🤞)

    @Airish85 Epic cut 16% last fall. Microsoft cut like 1900 employees in the games division recently and Riot cut like 11% of theirs. Every company is doing it. And from my experience even companies that do not need to do it will do it if everyone else is, just to cut some of the low performing away.
  • Relax guys. They will always need that one employer whose job it is to routinely ban me every time I attempt to create an Apex Legends account.

  • @hayhor So 670 jobs out ~13 000 means they cut significantly less than the competitors. Also if you look closely the cuts were targeting certain studios & projects like the new Star Wars FPS game that was in development that support my theory of losing the IP license to Epic.

    @Airish85They didn't lose the IP license. Respawn is still making the next Jedi game. The SW game that was cut was an entirely new Mandalorian game that was in very early development. Disney is specifically targeting fortnite. They already have skins for SW and other Disney stuff. Now fortnite will probably have modes and stuff that are related. Who knows. They invested a lot in Epic.
