Game keeps crashing with black screen and then crashes to desktop. No errors.

CPUI:5800X

Mobo: Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite WiFI

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 3200

GPU: Asus TUF RTX 4080 16GB

Storage: Samsung 970 Evo

PSU: Corsair RM850X

Motherboard has the latest BIOS revision.

All drivers for chipset, GPU, WiFI etc are all up to date.

GPU drivers are 546.33

I was playing earlier today for about 2 hours and had no issues. GPU temp never exceeds 52C and CPU never goes over 62C in-game. I know this because I use GPU-Z, HWinfo, and Hardware Monitor at all times. They show my temps in the task tray on my main monitor and I game on my other one so I can pay attention to temps in events like this.

I had a slight overclock on the GPU but disabled that so it runs stock and the game still crashes. I have had this 4080 for a little over a week and it's been super solid so I doubt it's that since no other games are crashing and I'm not getting BSOD's or any other symptoms that would point towards hardware issues.

I checked Event Viewer to see if there were any reported logs and there are none. I don't know where to look for BF2042 logs specifically.

I played WoW retail and The Division 2 for a couple of hours today and had no crashes. BF2042 is the ONLY game that is crashing so this is not a hardware issue.

The odd part is that I played BF2042 for 2 hours earlier this morning and had no crashes, stuttering, or any performance issues and now all of a sudden I get on after dinner and the game crashes so randomly. I played for 5 minutes and it crashed. Restarted the game and loaded into Discarded and fired at someone and the game crashed instantly. Did a full shutdown of my computer and loaded the game again. It loaded into Discarded and I was able to play two matches and then it crashed again but this time it crashed as the match ended and it was showing the scores.

There doesn't seem to be a common factor between the crashes.

  • I just ran the time spy benchmark and had no issues with crashes or any temperature issues.
Sorry for the phone pic but the benchmark wouldn't let me screenshot during it so I had to use my phone. That pic was taken near the end of the benchmark.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I had repaired BF2042. I did a full shutdown of my system and it still crashes to black screen and then straight to desktop. No errors shown or provided. No events recorded in Event Viewer in Windows.

  • Redownloaded drivers. Rebooted into safe mode. Ran DDU cleaner. Rebooted into BIOS. Loaded defaults and then loaded only the XMP profile. So far I have played 2 games with no crashes. Fingers crossed this holds.

  • Not sure what fixed it. Defaulted my BIOS and ran DDU Cleaner and redownloaded and installed the newest GPU drivers. Played 4 games in a row without crashing. Who knows...
