Re: Black Screen after starting the game (2 files failed to validate)

Perhaps your harddrive/filesystem needs a checkup before you verifyrepair the game. You should exit Steam, then try and check the hard drive where the game is located and the C drive for errors using the built in windows disk checking tool.

  • Restarted the PC, closed Steam, scanned the drives (no problem), then started Steam and verified the integrity of the files again. No change.

Thanks for posting about the results. Makes troubleshooting so much easier.

I've seen some people having issues with certain other application interfering, to rule out every application and service as the cause I always recommend trying to play the game during a proper clean boot:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows

if that works then we will know what to look for.

Ps. your graphics driver is out of date.

  • OK so, everything works now, although not perfectly. I'll describe step by step what I've been doing.

    1. I've updated my graphics driver to the latest version, restarted the pc, tried starting the games again (nothing changed, the games still were not loading).

    2. The idea hit me to check the compatibility settings of the executables. I went to the game folder and found ClientG.exe. I checked this and it was set to run in compatibility mode for Windows 8 for some reason. I disabled that, ran the executable and Command and Conquer booted and went up to the main menu. However when I tried starting a mission I got this problem: https://answers.ea.com/t5/Bug-Reports/Infinite-loading-screen/m-p/9178886#M7 (I left the mission to load for over a minute).

After doing this change I wanted to do it for Red Alert as well, as it seemed like progress, but I couldn't find the executable for it. I decided to go through the steps you suggested.

    3. I did a clean boot following the instructions from Microsoft, started both games and they worked. The games loaded in under 10 seconds (this will matter later). The missions also loaded when I started them.

    4. Assuming it was indeed some process that was interfering with the game, I decided to enable everything back up and communicate my findings here. Before doing that, however, I started Command and Conquer (in a normal boot session, with all processes and programs back up), to see what the current state was. After about 15 seconds of black screen, the westwood intro started and then I got to the main menu. Missions work as well (everything seems fine).

I then went on to check Red Alert, got the black screen again, but decided to wait it out a bit. After approximately 45 seconds, the intro movie started. I tested the game a bit and everything seems fine here as well after this.

So everything seems to be working, except that it takes C&C about 15 seconds to load and Red Alert about 40-45 seconds. I uploaded a video of it here so you can see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHqh94-ZMi8

At this point, I'm not sure if things had been working from the beginning, but I just didn't let Red Alert run for over 40 seconds (although I'm pretty sure I did, since I also checked C&C and that would supposedly have loaded in under 15 seconds), or if the clean boot helped when I started the games there.

Let me know if there's any other info I can help with.

P.S. The 2 files missing thing from the integrity check still occurs.
