Re: Controller Unrecognized Game unable to set

To get back mouse and keyboard controls

  1. Open this file in Wordpad: C:\Users\[your user name]\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age Inquisition\Save\ProfileOptions_profile
  2. Find the line that reads: GstInput.GamePad 1
  3. Change it to: GstInput.GamePad 0
  4. Save

To get game pad controls working

Gamepad controls don't work when more than one gamepad is connected to your PC. Sometimes other devices are mistaken for gamepads, such as gaming mice, gaming keyboards, joysticks, bluetooth adaptors, or other human interface devices. Unplug all extra devices, including your mouse and keyboard (do them one at a time) to find which device is the culprit. If the device is non-essential, unplug it or, if not possible, uninstall it. To uninstall a device (or just view all the devices your PC sees)

  1. Open Control Panel
  2. Click "View Devices and Printers" under the "Hardware and Sound" header.
  3. Find the device you want to uninstall
  4. Right click and select "Remove Device"

If the device causing trouble is an essential device (mouse, keyboard), try uninstalling the specialized drivers that came with it and using the windows generic drivers. If that doesn't help, you'll need to either play with keyboard and mouse or find a new device until this issue is fixed.

In my case, I had to do more than just unplug it for my Xbox 360 controller to register.

Under Device Manager -> Human Interface Devices, I had another controller (a Razor Nostromo) which wasn't even plugged in but was still appearing in the list.  I had to right click and disable it, then my controller worked.  Look for similar things in your device manager and see if that helps.

While I appreciate that this may in fact resolve this issue I do hope that there is a proper fix in coming soon. Switching peripherals in and out might not be the hardest thing to do it's not a hassle I would expect from a game of this calibre and one built with controller style gaming in mind. Either way thanks for the clear response and I hope EA sees that this issue shouldn't be left to the user to resolve in this way.

Issue still unresolved for me, this fix and others posted here are not working. I was made to understand this game would work with gamepads, and the logitech dual-action controller has been one of the most prevalent PC controllers on the market for years. The keyboard/mouse setup is practically unusable. I'm not spending hours online trying to troubleshoot what should be a finished product.

I'm submitting for a refund, first EA game I've purchased since Mass Effect 3. Nice job folks, you had a second chance and you blew it. Want my money? Delay a game instead of releasing a buggy mess with promises to 'patch it later'. Last time I make the mistake of purchasing from EA.

I had the same problem and managed to get my xbox 360 controller (w/ USB wireless dongle) working.

First I unplugged the USB receiver, then I went to Device Manager. I have a logitech wireless keyboard and mouse and there were a bunch of entries under the Human Interface Devices category:

    • 3Dconnexion KMJ emulator (spacemouse)
    • HID-compliant consumer control device
    • HID-compliant device
    • HID-compliant device
    • HID-compliant game controller
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying device
    • Logitech Unifying USB receiver
    • USB Input Device
    • USB Input Device
    • USB Input Device (Logitech Download Assistant)

According to this Microsoft Xbox Support article:

When the controller is successfully installed, you see three entries in Device Manager. There should be two entries under Human Interface Devices:

    • HID-compliant game controller
    • USB Human Interface Device

Additionally, there should be a third entry in under Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class:

    • Xbox 360 Controller for Windows

Even though I had unplugged my controller from my system, there was still a HID-compliant game controller driver listed in my device manager. Hmmmm. I disabled it (right click, disable), then plugged in my xbox controller. Soon my Device Manager looked like this:

    Human Interface Devices

    • 3Dconnexion KMJ emulator (spacemouse)
    • HID-compliant consumer control device
    • HID-compliant device
    • HID-compliant device
    • HID-compliant game controller
    • HID-compliant game controller [disabled]
    • Logitech HID-compliant Unifying device
    • Logitech Unifying USB receiver
    • USB Input Device
    • USB Input Device
    • USB Input Device (Logitech Download Assistant)

Microsoft Common Controller for Windows Class

    • Xbox 360 Wireless Receiver for Windows

I am not sure if one of those "USB Input Device" entries corresponds to the "USB Human Interface Device" entry indicated in the Microsoft Support article, but I didn't disable any of them.

I turned on my xbox controller, started dragon age, and selected "gamepad" from the controls menu. Surprise, the controller worked.

I'll report back if it stops working. For now it seems like some systems end up with multiple drivers for the xbox controller (perhaps if multiple controllers are connected in the past?). DA2 grabs the first one, which may not correspond to the xbox controller that is actually connected. Disabling "HID-compliant game controller" drivers that are left over when the xbox controller is disconnected may help DA2 select the driver that is actually associated with the controller.

same total frustration here. ive spent hours now trying to resolve switching the control scheme to "controller" AFTER IMMEDIATLEY GETTING LOCKED OUT  I had learn  to edit some secret file and then to attempt to get pc controller support it was suggested here that i unplug everything from my pc and then if that doesnt work  try a "clean boot" ie, disable every single non-microsoft driver and service and reboot. OF COURSE NONE OF THIS WORKED.

This situation preposterous. The issue clearly is not resolved. Just simply toggling from mouse and keyboard to "controller" locks you out instantly and forces you into some techno acrobatics just to recover control.

OK, its just me, right? (no nostromo here btw)

So why does Shadows of Mordor WORK PERFECTLY ootb with my xbox wireless and why does DA I only recognize the L1 and L2 when I switch to "controller" ???

You guys working on some DLC? HOW ABOUT YOU FIX THIS !@##$ PIECE OF !@##$ game FIRST!!!!!

    PATHETIC !!!!!!

    I WANT MY MONEY BACK.

  • My 360 controller has stopped working since the latest patch. Working fine with every other games. Game detects my controller but nothing happens when I press start or anything.

1 - Unplugged all other USB

2 - Disabled all others HID or controllers in Device Manager

3 - Controller working fine on all other games.

Coudn't bare the game control with kb+m so unfortunately I would have to wait until it's fixed. Sigh.

  • So true! My Logitech Rumble worked just fine couple of months ago. And it just stopped after some patch. I have the latest drivers, no other controllers. My gamepad works on all other games. I' very dissapointed.

In my case I had to set the service Windows Management Instrumentation to 'manual'. hit win^r, type 'services.msc' find the above name and doubleclick it. Put it to manual and it should start when needed.
  • @Admiral_Kong i'm not computer tech savy so correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think i can uninstall keyboard and mouse when on a laptop without using all function? i don't have any other controller or gamepads owned let alone plugged. just my xbox one controller. so I'm not really sure what to do.

I'm closing this thread to stop it from being necroed.

If you have any issues with Dragon Age, please make a new topic about your problems and what kind of steps you have tried to solve them.
