Sims 3 Pet expansion

I downloaded the Sims 3 starter pack and also bought 60 bucks in expansions....I'm trying to download one of them (pets) and it gets to the end of the download and says i need an installled version of sims 3 on my computer....but I installed that with the starter pack.....what do i do?
