Aim assist on Apex

Supposedly you are able to take off aim assist by turning off target compensation in ALC, however mine has always been off as long as I have been playing, and yet there have been many, many times as I am either sniping at range, or running past a downed opponent that my reticle focuses on either not where I am intending to aim or where I am running to.

This is extremely frustrating in the latter case since most times I would be pushing a team and then, boom. I'm staring at the floor at some guy crawling and I get shot in the top of my head by the guy I was supposed to be looking at.

Is there any way to totally turn it off? Since it seems to be somehow running in the background
