"This game mode shouldn't cater to players who think it's too hard"
My takeaway from that statement is that you feel like the current ranked mode is one huge set of compromises aimed at helping less serious players feel serious without having to put in the work. Am I reading that right?
You mentioned Ranked as an example, but I think Wildcard is currently the main culprit.
Players are elimination farming in Wildcard and then beating their chest as if they're the best. I think the devs are making everyone feel like good players intentionally and I get it. Illusion sells.
For example, the first time I gained the 4K badge and 20 elimination badge was in Wildcard, and I've been playing since day one. I still think these badges need to be a different color shade from the original, similar to the limited time solo only game mode.
I'm a decent player at best, and that's okay. I know I will never reach the heights of Apex without perfecting my game play and team play, especially since I mostly solo queue. This same logic applies to Rocket League, Rivals, Overwatch, Call of Duty, Valorant, Rainbow Six Seige, Counter Strike, etc. In those games if you're not good it will show through your game play, immediately. Unfortunately, for Battle Royale games players have free agency to think otherwise because Battle Royale isn't an extremely "confined game mode". Battle Royale is a game mode where players want to skydive on a large map and do whatever, and that will never be a competitive format. It's fun though!!!!
Competitive = Confinement. That's just how it is in sports, and that includes eSports.
I enjoy Wildcard. It's a great arcade mode. Although, I personally enjoy competitive game play, it keeps me awake. You'll see after reaching 40. 😉
In Battle Royale skill should be determined by win rate first (king of the hill), then all other metrics second. For example, if a solo queue player is hot dropping to obtain eliminations first by nature they will most likely have a low win rate. If a solo queue player has one high elimination game every ten matches this creates an illusion that you're good. It would be nice if all player stats were visible to have clear evidence of how good players really are, not just hearsay.
