I loved Apex legends for nearly two years. It was the game I played exclusively for nearly that whole time. What made me end up hating it and quitting is primarily two things; awful matchmaking and awful servers/netcode.
Notice that these are the two things they still refuse to do anything about? This game is a sinking ship and they just bale the water with a pale instead of fixing the holes. Even worse, they refuse to even acknowledge the holes. It's pretty sad and embarrassing.
I jumped on today after having not played for a few months. I switched from Xbox to PS and I just got a ps5 and wanted to see the game in 60fps. Started a new account and admittedly I'm rusty and it's a different controller but even at level 1 half the lobby was moving and shooting like average to pro players. Probably because half of them were smurf accounts from players who are tired or getting reamed in casual solo lobbies, and create new accounts to enjoy the game for a brief time.
Reverse boosting is a thing for this very reason. People don't enjoy SBMM in general but it's especially bad when you combine it with outdated servers and diminishing player bases.
Sweaty lobbies are fine with me. I dont mind an intense lobby with low kill counts and challenging fights. That's not the issue. When I get steamrolled 15 times in a row by perfectly coordinated enemies and I got two teammates licking windows while I'm dying in the same room, that's not sweaty; it's unbalanced.
If solo queues guarantee * teammates and joining with friends guarantees ultra hard opponents then there is no casual play.
SBMM (or EOMM really) should be a guy with 1.2KD should be comparably matched with and against players with 1.0-1.4KD. It is definitely not that.
Yes, the problem is getting rolled consistantly for 2 hours straight. The matchmaking is super unbalanced and like you said there is no promotion for casual play. It does very much seem like if you queue with friends you are in for hard lobbies all day and night but also if you do solo then be prepared to have a super unbalanced team that will probably still get matched up with pre-made lobbies that will stream-role you anyway. Welcome to Apex Legends.
Now I admit I went on yesterday with some friends and we had some very very good matches won 3-4 games, came 2nd and 3rd like a few times, and there was the one or two game we died at the start and the middle. No clearly this is more fun but maybe I was on the other side of it and killed some poor solo players and getting matched with people way under skilled? I don't know. But again this comes back to your point that it is not consistant at all how can some days you get hard lobbies and other you get easy ones. How are you meant to improve like this? To me it just seems like it's not very well established imo. Something needs fixing and it's easier saids than done but thanks for sharing, appreciate that!
