Glad you were not there earlier, when the state of the sound was even worse :) Besides this seasons introduction of super loud teammate footsteps, actually audio has become marginally better vs all of the seasons before that, yet sure enough mentioned and many other inconveniences that ruin the game / makes it close to "mute and play" existed then and still do.
I somehow think that actually the aim of the game is to create total clusterf^%& of visuals and audio to make it harder to spot and prefire enemies. And part of getting good is actually realizing that and tune performance be it GPU software tweaks, in game cfg command tweaks or sound equalizers. In comparison in Valorant you can still do that yet game in it's "raw" state is much more playable vs in Apex "un-tuned" state is just chaos.
