How you could patch out the lifeline camping outside the ring strategy

I'm sure most of you have heard this, but you can just camp outside the ring as lifeline and pop meds until the enemies die. A pretty efficent strategy, but really boring. You can brag to your friends how you have won so many games by covering in fear in some corner, doing nothing and waiting till you're the last one left. Yay.

Edit: As it turns out, alot of people actually haven't encountered this strategy before, so here, a quick video showing what kind of play I'm talking about:

https://www.reddit.com/r/apexlegends/comments/aw0pks/lifeline_legendary_backpack_20_medkits_win/

Keep in mind that he didn't do that for a short while either. He had already used 15 medkits before he even started recording.

So here's how this strategy could be patched out of the game:

  • After the final round, make another ring start rapidly closing in.
  • Make the other ring instantly kill.
  • Give it around 10 - 20 seconds until it fully closes.

Some pros of this idea:

  • Would give the other squad a chance to win, if they just have a medkit to heal in the final round.
  • Would force the camper squad to push into the other players.
  • Would be pretty easy to implement as well, just copy/paste the previous ring code and increase the damage to kill instantly.

And there, how to patch out the most annoying strategy in the game without affecting the gameplay experience of others at all.

It dont need patching! Its very hard to pull, you need gold backpack, a LOT of meds, luck to you stay alive until end, it happens maybe once in 1000 games, and if you did , it is kinda achievement!

  • This is not a valid strategy. I am a lifeline main who plays with randoms I have 120 wins over 2k kills for the season and missed over 1-month of the season. If you think it's a free win I suggest you try playing lifeline and see how many times you fail before you actually win attempting this.

I have spent a long time out of the ring, but by the time the 3rd one closes you take a lot of damage so much so it's very hard to even get med kits off.

What is required for this to be pulled off.

    1) Good luck at the start of the game. GEAR- FIRST ROTATION, SECOND ROTATION and so on -FORCED FIGHTS BY OTHER TEAMS.

    1) The other teams near the end being completely clueless. (VERY RARE) Almost always the last couple teams are very smart players.

    2) A mass amount of med kits (You mentioned Phoenix kits, but they are not viable at all for this strategy they take the longest to use and DON'T STACK so they waste bag space.

    3) Fast healing back pack.

    4) Teammates who understand the objective so they feed you gear and don't draw unnecessary attention to you.

    5) And finally a lot of people are not aware of this but if there are two teams left and 1 team does not touch the zone before it closes and the other team is already in it THE TEAM ALREADY IN THE ZONE AUTOMATICALLY WINS.

    6) People inside the zone can shoot out side of it. So you sit there taking a ton of damage 3 players will find a way to at least poke you or attack you out right eventually.

    7) This is not a issue. Just attempt it and you will see how foolish of a strategy this really is. It's better to learn to fight anyways. If you can fight you can win almost any game. I have won solo several times after my teammates left. Easily dispatching the final team of 2 or 3. It's really not that hard if you have good game sense.

@AIItheRageI love you Lifeline! Marry me! Be with me in my squad, help me through tough matches! :P

  • It’s not common but I’ve seen it a few times on stream. It’s just a stupid “strategy” with zero counter and it’s so easy to fix it. Just make the last 2-3 circles impossible to out-heal even if you’re lifeline with gold back back.
  • I say not at all. The original suggestion of ramping damage is better.
having her heal drone in the ring for those moments where theres a bit of a ways to get inside the safe zone and a fight you must survive is part of the experience. Having her drone impacted in any way will kill any miraculous plays under these circumstances

I say ramp up damage after a set period of time (considering sometimes the ring is just so far away, I'd give them 1 minute before the damage begins to increase in value per tick)

that way you have normal play, AND you can't live outside of the zone forever.
even better is the idea that if they DO choose to spend that minute outside, that gives whatever surviving squads more time to setup for approaching squads. win win
  • I think the way to go would be to add an increased cast time based on how much hp you have healed in the last 20 seconds. If you have healed more than 200hp, suddenly everything takes twice as long to use (hp only, not shields). If you have healed more than 400, or you dont take a 15-20 second break between heals, it goes to 3x base cast time. Then 4x. By that time, if you have been healing just outside the small circle, the other team is inside the circle, you will be dead before the circle has a chance to kill them. This would have a minimal impact on any other circumstances, because unless you are healspamming where else would you be using medkits back to back? Earlier zones are a non issue since you can wait about a minute between uses until you get to a zone size where its absolutely reasonable to expect you to get inside within 2 medkit uses.

Edit: gonna throw in another alternative backing up old mates damage ramp suggestion. Set timers based on which round it is, for the first round 2 mins, second round 1 min etc reducing to 10 seconds when the zone is at its second smallest. After that time, the damage doubles. When the same time goes up again (4 mins from round 1), it doubles AGAIN (now doing 4x standard damage for that round). A competent team will 100% find the straggler INSIDE the second last zone, forcing them to sit outside that zone to make the strategy work, but within 30 seconds it will be absolutely impossible to outheal.

  • I'm not sure if this is real since I didn't even know the circle completely closes at a certain point. If the lifeline thing is an issue then just make it so that the final circle never closes? People inside the circle will live until the final team engages them then. Just for peace of mind they can also make it so that the general position of both squads is marked every 20 seconds or so. Just a lazy idea since I can't imagine this being a big deal.

  • if the final circle never closes you would have some trolls just sit in there without fighting and the server never shuts down. every 20 seconds would be a bit too frequent, but just a general 90-180 degree marker similar to when being fired upon every 30 seconds or so if no shots have been fired in the last 30 seconds would probably be ok. Im still in favor of increasing cast times for excessive med use or ramping the damage the circle deals.
  • If the final ring never closes, it might get stuck on a building with multiple floors, with one team on the bottom floor and one on the top. Then, the team who gives up first and pushes outside the ring so they could fight would be at a serious disadvantage, constantly taking damage.

I'd still prefer the second ring of death creeping up after the final round. It wouldn't be lore-breaking, it wouldn't nerf any of the characters, nor would it change the normal gameplay at all.
