Not enough players for matchmaking...Really?

to the development team,

I have read the recently published "apex legends™: Matchmaking Test Update." I am concerned that your team cites "population shortage" as the reason for the unavoidable existence of mixed-rank matchmaking.

I believe that the "population shortage" is not a valid reason to postpone measures aimed at improving Matchmaking (MM) quality. The current issues likely stem from past operational decisions and flaws in the initial design.

The cause of the non-ranked Duos mode shrinkage was not solely the "population decrease due to the Wild Card mode." Even before the introduction of Wild Card, Duos players were already participating in other modes by relying on the system to backfill a third, random teammate.

If, from the start of the service, participation by Duos had been restricted in both ranked and non-ranked Trios, players would have been naturally guided to the Duos mode, potentially mitigating the current MM population dispersal issue. I see no reasonable justification for maintaining this flawed structure now.

Even with a population decrease, there are concrete ways to secure an active player pool and enhance fairness:

  1.  Strengthen Account Inactivity Risks: We recommend imposing penalties, such as revoking promotion status upon failure to meet a minimum number of matches required after promotion for players who stop playing after gaining rewards (especially those in Tier 4 and Masters). This will help maintain the player pool in the higher tiers, where activity tends to drop off.
  2.  Prohibit Backfilling for Duos: Restricting Duos participants to "No Fill" only (prohibiting backfilling) would simplify the MM structure to primarily Solo or Full-Stack (Trio). This adjustment would ensure matchmaking quality even in ranked content and strongly encourage the use of the non-ranked Duos mode.

Maintaining the status quo creates a risk where only Duos and players who utilize smurfing unjustly benefit, leading to a loss of vitality across the entire game.

Population shortage is not a reason to abandon improvement. While these suggestions may be amateurish, I sincerely hope that you, as professionals, will explore more effective and realistic solutions. Please do not give up.

Artists, design this game completely and thoroughly.

  • Putting together a match, a proper match, requires lots of players, lots of time, or a narrow skill gap. This game has never had a narrow skill gap and it seems to get wider with each new update and each new cheat device that enters the market. This game used to have lots of players (and even then struggled with quality matchmaking) and now has a lot fewer. So the last variable in the equation is time. They could allow the process to take as much time as required to reach the goal of a balanced lobby. They claim they were starting to do this... last season? The one before? I can't remember exactly when it was, but I seem to recall that they said they would let outlier players (high mmr) wait longer for matches rather than put them into lower mmr lobbies where they obviously would crush all comers. Based on my own matchmaking experience they either never even bothered to try this, have already given up on it, or were simply referring to master+ players as high mmr. Lobbies are still mostly all over the place. And not satisfying. And since I haven't seen any posts here from high-skill players complaining about wait times then I have to assume it was all bunkum.

No, I'm sorry to be the one to say the quiet part out loud, but "not enough players" is just the excuse of the moment. This game has never had high-functioning sbmm. Nor has any other shooter I've played since the dawn of online multiplayer shooters with Halo 2. No developer has ever even got the principles of sbmm right, much less the execution. They never will. And even if they did, it would all be ruined in the blink of an eye by the army of cheaters who run this game, and by the army of smurfs trying to hide their real abilities so they can square off against easy targets.

  • There are enough people, but when I want to "chill" in pubs or Wildcard, I play with the same 100-200 people every day, and I already know their names by heart. It's all sweat and cheaters.

Matchmaking has been a joke for the past few seasons.
