You shouldnt focus on the name "heavy" and "light" too much. In the end, its just a classification/categorization of weapon and its ammo; they could be called yellow and green ammo for all I care =)
I think the original idea was that guns using heavy ammo were supposed to have slightly higher DMG per bullet hit (not dps) put slightly lower bullet travel velocity, whereas weapon using light ammo would have lower damage per bullet but slighly faster velocity. This is mostly accurate I think, with exception of the G7 Scout, which has both a fast bullet travel velocity and a high dmg per bullet.
Regardless, the name heavy and light is not supposed to reflect on how "big" of a gun it is. A R301 can use light ammo and a Prowler use heavy even if the Prowler is smaller =)

@BabbediboopiSo basically the weapons have a damage output and the bullets have there own to..?
- 6 years ago@DaleWWilson95 No, its differenz for each weapon. A Wingman hits way harder per shot than a Prowler for example.
- 6 years ago@DaleWWilson95 Light and heavy dosnt choose wether a weapon is an AR or SMG, for example a Havoc is also an Assault Rifle, while a devotion is a LMG the type of ammo dosnt really matter that much imo weapon types are based off of firing rate, the size of the mags like LMGs have huge magazines regardless if its a spitfire with heavy ammo or a devotion/L Star with energy ammo and as @Babbediboopi said other factors like the ammount of bullet drop and ammount of damage per shot also seperate the weapon types
