We need 2FA or other smurf-proofing in Ranked.

This season has been atrocious in the number of smurfs I've come across. I report them every time I see them but they just keep coming. It's to the point that I'll just have to walk away for a while soon, literally only because of this issue, which is a bummer. I know Respawn and EA don't give a crap about me as a mediocre player, but I wanted to mention this before I take a break from the game.

Please add 2FA as a band-aid, or something smarter than that, and please do so very soon.

  • @E9ine_AC I fully understand there are players like you who've ranked down, and while it can be frustrating to get wrecked by folks who have done that, I never count that as a smurf killing me. Anyone who doesn't show that they're a new smurf account through either their level badge or some other badge, I just accept as someone who is better than me. No worries on that end. And I know some people have 3-5 accounts that they cycle through so they always have a ranked-down account to mess around on, which is messed up but hard to fix at this point.

The only "smurfs" I'm counting for this super-frustrating ranty thread of mine are the ones that flaunt it. They're level 20, or 30. They have all the damage and kills badges. And they put that right on their banner so everyone knows. If you're smurfing and you bother to hide it - which I'm sure a lot of people do - those aren't counted by me, personally, as a smurf. I'm only counting guaranteed smurfs.

So I imagine there are even more smurfs than I'm seeing, but I'm only taking issue with the fact that nothing is done to stop these folks from flagrantly jumping onto a new account, specifically to kill lower-skilled or new players.

As for SBMM being the reason, I'm sure that's some of it. If Respawn wants to work to tune SBMM to help prevent smurfs, more power to them. But I'd like them to do basically any steps at all, especially basic ones like 2-factor authentication to unlock Ranked, to stop the rampant smurfing.

It's a giant bummer. I really like Apex but a good game is few and far between at this point, and I'm trying out other games to try to replace it at this point.

@BrunoPuntzJonezBelieve it or not the lower level new accounts for what ever reason seem to have a much better chance at hierlooms verse older accounts. We see loads of low low level legends rocking their hierlooms. My friend who was new to apex has gotten 3 at level 100. While i paid loads for only 2. So this may be a big reason why its done also if they can obtain same badges then whats some skins left behind if you get your fav hierloom.

@BrunoPuntzJonez ps4, xbox and pc. 2 accounts on pc because I was using one to practice mouse and keyboard. Call that smurfing if you want but getting my * handed to me by bronze players wasnt exactly unfair to them was it? Pretty much just saying until they have cross progression they cant stop smurfs because if someone switches platforms that person would be considered a smurf because they have an account on another platform and know a lot about the game. But in reality it really makes no difference if it was a smurf or just some guy who recently switched platforms. You dont see smurfs at higher lobby levels or if you do it makes no difference because they're in the higher levels where they should be and it makes no difference what account theyre on.
  • @BrunoPuntzJonez I'm pretty sure you are required to verify account ownership when you sign into the Origin launcher, and a verified email address is required to set up an EA Account.

Smurfing has really exploded the last few months. Because of this I barely play ranked so I have to start in bronze every time. I remember in season 2 and 3, the bronze rank was very easy (as it should be for someone that isn't new to the game). Now, it's almost impossible to find a bronze lobby without a top tier/predator in disguise.

Ranked, which should be the ultimate form of skillbased matchmaking, is now a place where the top 1% gets to fight the bottom 1%.

Chad Grenier's words about sbmm: "It's clearly good for the game. I know that we get backlash from certain key players who want to go pubstomp people, but for every person pubstomping, there's many victims that have the opposite experience, where they're getting smacked. We need skill-based matchmaking".

I understand your statement, mister developer, but now the pubstomping has shifted towards the lower ranks in your ranked system. As long as you allow smurfing, stomping (whether it be pubs or ranked) will ALWAYS exist.

  • @CompleatBeet That is "1-factor verification", it's just an email. It's literally nothing.

But don't worry, I quit the game because of all the smurfing so it's not really a problem for me anymore! I don't know if it's gotten better or worse in the last few weeks but until Respawn acknowledges it and does literally anything to curtail it, I really can't see myself bothering to come back and play.

It's a big shame because I really love the game, but it's not worth the frustration it caused me. It just isn't fun to play when smurfs are in 4/5 matches ruining the match-making. At the very least, Ranked should be a place safe from smurfs even if they want to let pubs stay a wasteland.
  • Just making it bannable would remove a lot of smurfs. So many youtubers/streamers do it, including big youtuber like zylbrad. People would still do it but a lot less than normal. If they stopped banning cheaters there would suddenly be so many more cheaters. Just the threat of getting banned will get a lot of people to stop even if its hard to enforce.
