Sometimes you are matched as the "carry" or matched with a "carry" player, someone that is better than the majority of players on the current server.
Sometimes this gives the "carry" an opportunity to get a high kill count and the lower skilled players a joyride and a win. So it may be a win-win situation.
But it can also be very frustrating for the player that has to carry or too much to handle for the other two allies.
I think they have several variables when they match players, but I think theres some sort of averaging of skill points, so they won't match the top 3 players on the same team and pitch them against the other average players, but distribute them so that the teams collective average "skill points" can be matched with the others.
This may result in very low skilled players being matched with an extremely experienced.
It would only be necessary to add that the algorithm works differently depending on the number and "level" of players waiting to enter.
If you play on the servers in Brazil at 5 am local time, you will be able to see that the SBMM loses its ability to maneuver and becomes less fair.

@fernando093 exactly, that’s why sbmm should be removed so gameplay is consistent no matter what time you play. Playing people of all skills and knowing what to expect when you enter a public match would be ideal.
I believe removing sbmm would boost ranked gameplay participation a lot.
