I don't disagree. Truly fair is a free for all in my opinion, if we're all playing the same game, the best rise to the top. Different platforms mixing, control methods mixing, and the forming of teams muddy the waters of fair so I can see the justification for some SBMM.
But the level of of SBMM has been pretty much what you described up until the last week, and that was fine. Ranked felt like a non stop sweat fest once ranked up, and pubs was much more varied. Rarely did I ever run into truly new players. Now with the new system, pubs is a non-stop sweat fest just like ranked is, so my question at the start of this thread remains.
Once upon a time a game just had one mode, a lobby was created from all players. Soon the idea came up to introduce a ranked mode where you can measure yourself against and play with likeminded people. Showcase your skill and climb up the ranks until your skill ceiling is hit.
Doing SBMM in ranked is like putting two ranked modes into one (and everyone is getting annoyingly long queueing times). Whats the point of a ranked mode where (non)-skilled players are just facing its own skill in most ranks (LP<MMR)? By your logic everyone is supposed to stay at the same rank as you cannot outperform your opponents - unless the mode is designed in a way that you gain rankpoints by doing average. Therefore, our current ranks could represent our total time played during a season at best. And our true rank is the MMR, which ironically is hidden.
By the countless negative reactions, the game is not enjoyable for a big part of players. We could argue for SBMM in regular trios/duos, but hey that is just another ranked mode without actually displaying a rank - where teammates are quitting left and right. So what about providing BR in just two different ranked modes, an SBMM mode and a trivial OG ranked mode? Unfortunately, this would lead to newer players only play the SBMM mode, making the OG mode obsolete. SBMM is nonsense, unless your MMR is actually your rank from the very beginning, where it being displayed introduces a lot more issues.
You gotta tackle the smurf problem and boosting friends in another way, everyone is supposed to just have one account. Make it simple and let the ranked mode be what it is supposed to be, a trivial mode where the rank represents your skill.
Something else:
I can just speak for myself, but what I love the most about the game are its long lasting fights. There isn't much more exciting in life than having an action-packed 10+ min round, fighting from the beginning till the end. You've made that extremely rare for skilled but non-professional players.
Instead of a more intense endgame, what you've achieved are countless hobbyless teams playing hide and seek, and rats camping in the heights. In solo Q you've got countless teammates not even trying to get the respawn banners or fight for their fellows in delicate situtations. So should we watch someone hiding for hours a day? Or just quit and be stuck in rank? Or what yall intend to achieve - to not die at all cost until the endgame, maybe by playing like filthy rats?
I'd guess that most players want to have fun during the whole game, and not just loot, rotate and camp for 10 mins each round, to then eventually have some fun, or being sent back to the lobby to waste again half the game doing nothing. We are not aiming to become pro gamers.
I support that aspiring esports players have a platform to practice, but not at the expense of more casual gamers.
My message to all the skilled fellows having no fun atm, be proud of your MMR and come back to ranked mode in a few weeks when matching your high MMR to others would take way too long - as is probably happening to you right now. You'll climb up those ranks in no time instead of struggling for weeks. I don't mind struggling in higher ranks, but not all the way out of gold or even bronze lobbies, while way less skilled players progress at the same speed at the beginning.

Well said mate, you've nailed it tbh. This season is a farce and Respawn/EA don't care obviously!
