A Matchmaking Rant

Right, my son loaded up today, four or five games in he ends up with a player who is ranked #13 on Apex Tracker for Kills. He got LASERED across the map by said player with a R99. My son has played 1,150 games and has 1,193 kills. His lifetime k/d is 1.03. Why is this player in with him? His teammates were random noobs.

Myself now. (I have also had this player in my lobby, more than once). My lifetime k/d is 1.09. I am constantly in games with the 20 kill / 4,000k Damage gang or Preds. How?!

If there are the reported 70,000,000 accounts, which worst case scenario leaves 15,000,000 active players across all  platforms, roughly 5,000,000 players per platform. Over the last three seasons there can only be 125,000 preds per platform, right?! (Max 2.5% of any platform as some will repeat the feat.)

So this guy has been put in a lobby that is an absolute cake walk. My son and I are closer to the bottom than the top. So why are we as paying customers being used as cannon fodder for Preds?

That is like putting me in with new starters, which never happens. I feel matchmaking should give every team / player an opportunity to win that lobby. But with these teams there is zero chance.

Why are they given such favourable lobbies compared to us lesser mortals??

  • SBMM tries to match players of "equal" skill with each other in matches. However no one really knows how the match maker calculates how much skill you have. What we do know is that it's not at all based on levels, playtime, or actual competitive rank. Lots of people have been doing independent tests to see how SBMM actually works as well, but I haven't heard anything definitive yet.

I have noticed however, that if you queue up with a premade group (so let's say your son or you grab 2 friends) it'll change up who you play with, but not who you play against. My friend started playing on PC recently, and they're sub level 40 and not very good. Every time we queued up our teammate would always, and I mean for 12 games in a row, ALWAYS be sub level 60 whilst we fought against level 200+s / Pred / Diamond players.

  • @pastaclown From my experience, the matchmaking takes into account factors like placement, kills, etc. in your previous games. If I win a match in a somewhat easy to moderate lobby, next match it will 100 % put me in diamond or pred lobby. Same way if I just die or place poorly in 2 or 3 matches, it will again put me in easy to moderate lobbies.

@BaldWraithSimp  Yeah i've noticed that. Especially if you get a win in what would be considered a difficult lobby. The matchmaking then proceeds to crap on you from a great height lol.

Won a match with 2 predator trail players in? Here have a match with 8 predator trails instead!

  • @SquishyVader This happens to me, especially in ranked mode, I am getting killed by a lot of diamond players while I am an platinum and also, what really pisses me the most, I am getting against people who are in current predator rank, this happened to me three times already... and is not like my friends are in a higher rank, we are all on platinum 4 and this is just really unfair playing against people in diamond, master or even predators.

@MandatoryIDtag i know right? Whenever i see 8+ Pred trails i usually just split away from my JM because i know they will land with the enemy Preds and i don't wanna subject my self to getting absolutely Stomped immediately XD

  • This.

I've said it before, the matchmaking has NOTHING to do with skill. My stats are similar to yours, got the 2k badge but I'm playing against players with 4k and 20k badges. In theory (or fact) they're 100% better than me. So how is this fair or skill based?!

Also, the numbers you talked about - if there are only 500 predators per platform why do I keep ending up in their lobbies? Why in God's name do we play in the same match if we are worlds apart skill wise?!

As much as this infuriates me I've come to realize that the devs won't fix this in spite of people leaving the game in droves. Most new accounts are smurfs, just so people can have some sense of fun before the matchmaking ruins it. Whoever is calling the shots over at Respawn should be fired! If they keep this up there won't be a playerbase left.

You guys know the BEST place to smurf ?

Let your rank drop then play in BRONZE or SILVER, you gonna love it until you don't want to rank up anymore, cough, cough, cough 🙂
