Apex Legends is becoming more than just a Battle Royale?

Hey Apex Legends Community!

We've just got some information on Apex Legends expanding and becoming more than just a Battle Royale Shooter, and I must say it is very promising.

When interviewed by Eurogamer, Game Director Chad Grenier commented on a lot of things regarding the future of Apex Legends, including some very tasty information on the topic above.

"Right now we're a battle royale game." he said, "I think if you look into the future, we have a lot of conversations of, you know, should we expand battle royale? We have this roster of Legends that people love - how else can we use them? I think looking into the future, you're probably going to see the game becoming more than just a battle royale game. You see we have all these LTMs and other ways to play. I think that's a great starting point."

This is massive in terms of Apex's future! From my viewpoint, Battle Royale games are fun, but they won't last as long as shooters like Overwatch or Call of Duty, you know where there's lots of ways to play. And to hear that a developer himself sees something like this happening in the foreseeable future is uplifting .

This is expanded even more with recent datamines of other game modes found in the game files, so, hopefully, we can see this become a reality in Season 7 or 8.

  • @CompleatBeet Saw the articles but didn’t read them. He might mean Apex now is ‘just’ a BR but that he wants it to be more than that, like a story interluding TF3 or something. The crypticness is always a throw-off. But we’ll see.

They don’t even got a good handle on Apex being a BR only... let alone more game modes XD
  • @Koochi-Q lol true, but other game modes are more forgiving when problems pop up. You just respawn and keep going. In BR, you get punted back to the lobby due to a glitch, lag, bad sound issues, cheaters, etc.

This is great news.  Right now they are just scratching the surface of the potential of this game and the legends.  I do agree that they must do more to continue to compete with games like COD and Overwatch.  These other games have learned that the more they offer in variety, the longer they can keep people engaged in their own game and ecosystem.

Overwatch 2 is almost entirely dedicated to a story campaign and co-op content.  So Blizzard is finally giving fans a heavy dose of PvE content.  They are giving each hero expanded power trees for the PvE content as well to make it more like an ARPG type of gameplay.  Multiplayer will be shared across both Overwatch 1 and 2, so MP only fans don't have to get Overwatch 2.  Also cosmetics carry over into Overwatch 2.

More and more these companies are finding that multiplayer only drastically limits the reach of their games.

@ArchAngeL-PCX Definitely true, they did TF1/2 right so here’s to hoping Apex gets good stuff too. But they’ll likely not venture too deep cause TF3 is coming and of course the die-hards will play Attrition over Apex TDM but the casuals will play Apex over TF3 which in turn will hurt the TF main game once again
  • @Koochi-Q I definitely agree. TF3 will factor into their decisions. I'd like to see them find a way to couple TF3 and Apex together like COD has done Warzone and it's main game. I could see it working like:

    - both Apex and TF3 launch out of the same launcher with each game's modes in separate menu items.
    - players don't have to have both downloaded if they aren't interested in one or the other
    - cosmetics for weapons are shared across both games, and characters too if they somehow mix the two.

@ArchAngeL-PCX I can see that too but Warzone was originally an extension of Modern Warfare so it’d make sense. It grew to be standalone tho but still closely linked to upcoming CoD titles like Cold War next month.

TF3 & Apex are same universe but different as they own launched independently. They can however share characteristics & a launcher but I think that’ll confuse gamers, unless Respawn makes perfectly clear what’s what.

But lets see down the line
  • @CompleatBeet If you watch the video @asukojo posted on the content creators thread I find it interesting they made the teams huge. Perhaps this is a step to try other things.
