Forum Discussion
I actually think your comment is pretty thoughtful. For discussion’s sake, I’d like to focus on the first sentence of your last paragraph.
“the idea that skilled players are entitled to more fun than low skilled players is very detrimental for the health of the game.”
I’m curious how you personally would feel if I changed one word in that sentence. Let’s try it:
“the idea that high skilled players are entitled to more WINS than low skilled players is very detrimental for the health of the game.”
I’m curious if you agree with the phrase after I changed “fun” to “wins”.
The conversation I like to have with people is, do you believe all players deserve to win at similar rates, or do you believe there should be a naturally occurring hierarchy in win rates, where low skilled players win at low rates, average skilled players win at average rates, and high skilled players win at above average rates.
A lot can change when you exchange fun and win.
But the only way that highly skilled players win more often than low skilled players is if lobbies contain a variety of players of different skill levels.
This means that each player can find opponent's around their skill level, but also means that the highly skilled players will make short work of significantly lower skilled player and thus win more often.
At first glance this sounds decent. Until you take into account that because lower skilled players lose more often against higher skilled players, there is a tendency that many low skilled players lose to high skilled players.
Furthermore I would argue that playing against equally skilled players is more fun since that provides a good challenge.
If I'm deleted before I could even register what happened I'm not having fun. If I delete somebody before they know what's going on I might have some fun, but not a lot.
Finally, success in the game is essentially zero sum (for somebody to win others must lose). And playing against a much higher skilled opponent really sucks.
So while "fun" and "win" are different separate concepts, increasing fun almost necessarily balances the win rates and fluctuating the win rate almost necessarily introduces non-fun games (for a specific group of players).
I'm not saying they are equal, or that you can't have fun without winning.
I'm saying that the entire system is a pile of hot garbage and it's very unlikely that you can both ensure that everybody has a fun game and that higher skill correlates to more wins
- 3 years ago@Anjunakrokus Here’s the thing though. I can’t play with my lesser skilled friends or the woman I love, I can’t just try new guns or characters and practice with them if I want to have a chance at winning. I have to sweat like it’s a tournament every single game. A lot of you don’t realize there are pub lobbies that are 95% diamond and higher out there, if I play solo I’m given the worst teammates imaginable. The algorithm expects me to carry them. I don’t want to roll around and stomp new players but once you hit a certain amount of hours or level it should be fair game at that point everyone should be lumped together

This is a game. Nobody want's any trophies, they just want to play the game and have fun. Want trophies? Play ranked.
You're claiming that if everybody is thrown together your friends won't get stomped?
With about 6% being diamond/masters (data from season 8) there would be about 3/4 of them in every lobby. While about 35% (21 players) would be silver or below, 32% (19 players) gold and 26% (16 players) platinum. That means that most players will get stomped. But at least you get to win.
We also separate boxers by weight and skill and by your argument a kid who has been training for a year should be put in a ring with Muhammad Ali. Only fair that Ali would win more, he's just better.

@AnjunakrokusI guarantee you if everyone is thrown together I would have a better experience with my lesser skilled friends bc we would at least have a chance with a balanced team to face. I am not exaggerating when I tell you my pubs consist of 95% diamonds and up mostly masters and preds. You said most players will get stomped, yes as they should the more skilled players EARNED their ability to defeat lesser skilled players. I got killed by ImperialHal today, guess what he’s worked hard to get that good. I have no Ill will at him I learn from it. Comparing boxing to apex isn’t a good analogy, boxing is no different than ranked you work your way up. We are talking about PUB lobbies here. Can we just agree there’s no right solution for everyone? If you think it’s fair that my win rate is around someones win rate who isn’t even half as good as me then I’m wasting my time here. Both sides here make valid points but I cannot accept the fact lesser skilled players have the same or in some cases a even higher win rate than someone tremendously superior to them all due to matchmaking. Imagine you’re really fast at stacking boxes. This other person isn’t fast and is lazy as hell. Y’all get paid the exact same amount, you’re required to stack more boxes than the lazy person despite the fact you are both paid the same all bc you have the ability to stack boxes faster. Is that fair?
