Caustic Lore

Alright, so I just had a moment when thinking about the lore of Caustic and stuff.

So, as revealed by the devs recently, Caustic gas is corrosive, which explains why it damages Pathfinder and other robotic characters. Caustic also knows a secret chemical that makes him immune.

But, it is implied that Caustic's gas mask and goggles aren't a defense against his own gas.

I have two different theories for his goggles.

1. They are similar to ski goggles. Ski goggles are usually specialized for a certain type of weather, like if it's snowing or not. Whatever tint they have help visibility in the right conditions. Obviously, this doesn't exactly translate to being able to see through gas, but then again Caustic can't completely see through it. The highlighting could be explained as just an exaggeration of the increased contrast. This doesn't explain, however, why his eyes glow/look weird. His goggles look like ski goggles as well, so there's that.

2. Side effects of the aforementioned chemical. It's possible that this chemical he has that makes him immune to his gas has a side effect of allowing him to see through his gas, at the price of having much more sensitive eyes. This could explain why his eyes are all glowy white, and the goggles.

3. Could be some combination of the two. He gains some ability from the chemical, but needs the goggles to see normally or something.

I think his mask is more like Bloodhound's mask, where his respiratory system was damaged beforehand and he needs a mask to filter the air. Some people have speculated that Caustic suffered from some respiratory disease in the past, possibly cystic fibrosis. Or, it could be something entirely different, but who knows? We'll have to wait until S5.

Sidenote: I'm not sure why the text sudenly inverted colors. I accidentally highlighted it while writing this, and I don't know how to turn it back. I can change the text color, but not the highlight.

  • @Sir_Named Guess we’ll find out in S5. My own opinion is that he had a failed experiment in which the gas affected his respiratory system and he now uses a mobile respirator (that bulging tank on his person) to breathe. Either that or that tank converts the NOX gas into breathable air without affecting him.
  • @Koochi-Q I'm not 100% sure what the tanks are for, as they aren't actually connected to his gas mask.
I'm guessing the tanks are like a mobile lab that allows him to produce more gas/gas traps on the go.

@Sir_Named Yea, not to his mask but it does seem to go to his mouthpiece through the back so might be a combo between a mobile gasmaker & my idea ;0

If you’re willing to compromise, I am too :P
  • @Sir_Named He actually has little windscreen wipers on his goggles, that you can't see in game, but they let Caustic see better. The goggles are attached to the mask, and he was too lazy to remove the mask with scissors, so he's stuck wearing it, and stuck with the mask that he doesn't actually need.

Caustic has laboured breathing, more than just the fact he's wearing a respiratory mask, I can confirm this as i've actually worn a gas mask before on a few occasions. He also has also has speckles of blood on his shoulder, you would assume its an enemies blood but i think its more likely that he has coughed it up.

I think you're spot on with the theory about his respiratory system, perhaps he was exposed to an earlier batch of the gas he uses today?

  • @Sir_NamedI can confirm that Caustics breathing is not due to the mask, worked with them before.

Now i want Caustics lore to get its own event, especially because Caustics lore is more relevant than most of the others. He is even one of the main reasons that Revenant is in the games.

@BigBlackCaustic Hold up. You worked with them before?

Caustic might get his own event in S5. I think I remember something like the devs saying that they're going to focus more on lore in S5. Not sure.
