Crypto is underwhelming

If you're spending half the game aimlessly flying around in his drone then yes he sucks.

So far i've heavily utilised the banner recover function and its brilliant, esp on early game wipeouts where you squad gets pinched between two other squads on landing.

I've been using the drone as an emp trap when being chased, that works nicely.

Also you can look at the legend banners around the map and it'll tell you if theres any enemy squads in your drones range(a huge time saver)

Aaaaand if you leave it flying in an area it auto scans.

Bottom line is crypto only sucks when his squad doesn't utilize him.
