Discussion - What do you think would be a good price for event packs?

I haven't studied any PC game economy or economics in general. But I have a hard time understanding why on earth a company that like to earn more money every year and sell a lot of products, set the price of event boxes so incredibly high that so few can even afford it at all?

Everything is relative ofc. but since I have a steady income of more than 3000€/month, so I can afford to shell out money on Apex Legends if I'd want to.
But since the event prices are so high, I only buy all items in an event one time per year max.

I would guess that would put me in the top 5% of people spending money on this game, since only 10 out of 300+ people I have as friends in Apex shell out any money on Apex at all.

So let's just to some quick math:

For 100€ you get 11 500 Apex coins

For a collection event you need 24 packs for 700 coins per pack = 16 800

So you need to buy another 5300 coins and end up spending roughly 150€ for a whole event.

I will only spend this amount of money once a year for some Mythic that I want more than my economic sanity allows me too.

Now IF the packs were 250 coins, roughly one third of the price, all 24 packs in an event would cost 6000 Apex Coins =  I most certainly would buy all the packs for every event!

6700 Apex Coins would still cost me 60€ which is the same cost as a AAA game on PC.

However, instead of spending 150€ on a single event per year, I would spend 60€ every month on each event = 720€ per year.

I would think I would still be in the top 20-30% of players that could afford this, but it would net Respawn/EA a 500% increase in profits from me and probably the same from another additional 15-20% of the player base.

I understand that Respawn would like the items to be special and not everyone have them, but the problem is that in this game no one stops in the middle of a fight to look at your skins, and many of the best looking skins make you more visible which is a detriment to using them in-game at all. Most people don't stream or make videos, so there's really nowhere you can hang out and show of your items like in an MMORPG for example.

So I think a sensible price for an event pack would be 250 coins, which is still a lot to most people.

What do you think?

  • @Mioracle I think game companies have teams of people that know what price point makes them the most money.

You want cheaper but they just released a statement that said they had two of their highest sales days during the last event, which cost almost double a normal event.
  • @hayhor Ofc. they have, but we have seen again and again that doesn't mean their perfect. Most big companies in the world do, but they still fail all the time as history has shown us.

Common sense says that if you can have a price point that everyone can afford instead of 5-10% of your player base you could earn a lot more money while also making more people happy. It's a win/win.

The FFXVII event is one of those special events with never before seen cosmetics that would be an exception for most people. So the sales this time is not surprising at all. I just meant the general pricing seems incredibly high since most people can't actually afford to spend 150€ per event.
  • @Mioracle They will have a army of statisticians and actuarial scientists figuring out the optimal price point. It's not geared towards most people (if you think it's too much, you're not the target audience). There is no way they just make this up, they did the math to ensure they maximise profit which any good company will do. It's a shame it's out of my price range but I'm not the target.

I get people hate it and think it's too expensive but, to those people, you are not their target audience.

@Mioracle I'm sure they are constantly refining things. This is why the last event was so different and more expensive.

Even if everyone could afford items most still won't buy it. The targets are the people that spend the most and repeat spenders. As long as those people keep buying it works
