I was wondering this too. I did a lot of damage to shields, breaking them often, but at the end it only shows a total of about 100-190 damage dealt on average
I think it only counts when hitting stand up enemies. Yesterday I knocked down a guy (100 damage), the killed him (100 damage) and then I died. The after match status showed I did 100 damage flat. So maybe shield and down opponents won't count.
Similarly, kill score goes to the person who knocked down someone, not the player who actually killed when he was down (tested yesterday, also).

it seems to stop recording any stats on death. so thrown nades doping damage, downs or kill after death don't record.. if you down someone then get killed then the person you downed dies it doesn't look like it records that either

That's not true.... You can actually watch your damage count up after you die or a kill pop in.
