Exploits vs Features

With all of the things you can do in apex, where do the developers draw the line between exploits and features?

The TOS states that one cannot:

  • Use or distribute unauthorized software programs or tools (such as "auto", "macro", hack or cheat software), or use exploits, bugs or problems in an EA Service to gain unfair advantage.
  • Engage or assist in cheating or other anticompetitive behavior (such as boosting, collusion, and match or matchmaking manipulation).

Is wall kicking, being a movement technique that is not taught and strange to use, and could give an advantage counted as an exploit? Is fast punching with Horizon, which does not require anything other than 4 default inputs, count as an exploit? Whenever anyone finds a new thing you can do, how do we know if it is a bannable offense or just a new technique which must be learned? While I agree that things like the patched-out dashboarding and autofire sentinel are frustrating and scummy to fight against, without an announcement in-game, is every player expected to browse the forums every time something like that occurs? There needs to be more communication on what is a technique that is intended or fine to use, and what counts as a bannable exploit.

On a side note, while this would probably be incredibly difficult or even impossible to code, an LTM where all of the old known exploits like Gibby barrel stacking, b-hop healing, fast punching, auto sentinel, and other goofy bugs got added back in somehow would probably be really fun.

  • @Ventus51701 Common sense should be enough to make a distinction between an exploit and a feature 🙂

    Example:
    Wall-kicking(wall bounce?)- Not an exploit
    Fast punching- Exploit

  • @Ventus51701 wall hopping is a feature, fast-punching is an exploit.

I would explicitly define an exploit as something that anyone can pick up in a minute and use to gain an advantage in combat. Things like auto-sentinel, fast-punching, Rampart turret on Crypto drone, etc. etc. are exploits.

Features I would define as something you learn to give you an advantage. Armor-swapping, wall-hopping, zipline hopping, strafing, recoil control, etc. etc. are all things that aren't immediately explained but are learned skills that you practice to give you an edge in combat. I learned wall-hopping ages ago, and despite that I rarely use it in combat, and only get it right about 70% of the time.

@BaldWraithSimp Common sense is not a great way to make a distinction. For a wide audience, you cannot assume that everyone has common sense, it is better if they would specify and tell the game.

  • @pastaclown Anyone can pick up armor swapping in a minute, if anything fast punching requires more skill to pull off than armor swapping. Especially for a game with a ranked mode and esports aspirations, one needs clear-cut definitions. I feel like making an announcement somewhere at least would not be that difficult, and would make the line between exploit and feature clearer, otherwise, it is left to the individual to decide what one can "pick up in a minute and use to gain an advantage in combat" and what one must "learn to give you an advantage", and as seen by the American justice system that is usually not a good way to deal with things.

@Ventus51701 Well, I won't argue semantics with you. I have 394,893 chickens to kill in Runescape. Why not recreate this thread on the Apex Legends Reddit and see if you can get a developer to respond to you there? That'd be the fastest (if not most unlikely) way to really get a concrete answer for yourself and also maybe get them to talk about it.

In addition, they also seem to have started AMAs, perhaps asking the same question during one of those will net you an answer. I got a link to the Subreddit here: https://www.reddit.com/r/apexlegends/

  • @Ventus51701 you ask them to communicate more about exploits, but also state that not everyone browses forums and sites. Should they put announcements inside the game about all the exploits discovered to date and not yet fixed?

It's difficult to draw the line between techniques and exploits. Not all exploits are bannable, some are very unfair, while others can even be accepted and tweaked into new features. Common sense should be mandatory, banning players with serious lack of discernment may actually be the healthier choice in the end.

@Ventus51701 I think it's a very difficult thing to define. Some things can technically be labeled an exploit, but they are not gaining an advantage.

It's difficult to explain, but here is a simple solution.. When in doubt, just don't do it or ask AHQ. We can always request a CM give us their opinion on it.
