future of this game?

After the event of a 15 year old hacking the servers, after cheaters are not banned and therefore there has been a scary increase in cheaters, does anyone have any idea when and how this game will end? I believe it will have a very short life, but what about you?

  • @lnxtv Until they stop turning a profit for more than just one year. I have no idea who is buying overpriced skins and heirlooms, so that could be soon.

Already too late. It's lasted far longer than most shooters, and with a much higher population ongoing. Maybe you meant "going forward?" Hard to say where it goes from here. It's possible that some new anti-cheat is in the works and will drop soon. It's possible that the game will get other major overhauls in the near future. EA has certainly alluded to these types of changes/updates in their investor calls. I'm sure all of it will happen. I'm not sure that any of it will happen soon. I'm also not sure how long players will tolerate the problems without clear communication from the developer stating what they plan to do and when. But, as others have said, if the money keeps rolling in then the game soldiers on in whatever state it may be.
  • Just putting this out here:

Destroyer2009's username doesn't reference his age, it seems to be referencing a short from 2009 called Destroyer: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1344822/

It's description is: "A man navigates through a future of overwhelming security.", which is quite fitting for what they have been doing, so don't be too quick to call them out as a "15 year old" (Not that we should really be looking into their personal details anyways, but a bit more context regarding his username)

There also has been no proof of the servers getting directly hacked either, a lot of false information has been floating around as a lot of players are uncertain and are just spreading possible theories. We know that the device of one of the participants was compromised, possibly malware, which could have been used to cause the exact scenario we witnessed.

Overall, nothing really confirmed as far I'm aware, but Thor from Pirate Software has made some videos with some amazing insight and context regarding the issue:

It's also important to keep in mind that with the Ranked LVL Minimum being lowered to 20 (from 50) could make it look like there are many more cheaters, whilst simply the cheaters just moved from casual to ranked. Whilst the amount of cheaters that are witnessed seem to be higher, it's likely that they just moved from one place to another.

Of course the total amount of cheaters could've increased as well, but this is a bit hard to pinpoint for normal players like us, so cheaters going from casual to ranked is definitely a plausible theory.

Can't +1 XP this comment enough.

The technical issues with cheating, smurfs, and matchmaking are things I feel like EA/Respawn should be able to address. The lack of public communication makes me suspect that they just don't care.

TBH, these issues may kill free to play model for PvP games because if you want to sustain it you have to fund methods of fighting them and selling $60 skins ain't gonna cut it. Ban waves only happen of you pay a team to do it and give them good tools to do it effectively. None of these things seem to be in place at EA/Respawn anymore (if they ever were), so this is what you get.

  • @lnxtv Well based on the fact I couldn't get into the game yesterday because it was flooded with players I expect it's going to keep going for a long time.

@HappyHourSumwur I agree free to play is an issue and would gladly pay for a game if it meant less cheating and more banning. The issue is COD isn't free to play and it has a lot of cheating.

Financials are not easy to come by, but at the four-year mark, so roughly this time last year, Apex had grossed something along the lines of three billion dollars. Billion with a B. I'm sure the billion-dollar-per-year rate is dropping over time, but that's still substantial revenue. Pretty sure that even puts Call of Duty, at $60 per, in the rear view mirror. And CoD has to rebuild itself every two or three years, where all Apex has to do is throw out a new map every so often. I can't see how money is the issue unless the amount that EA slices off the top is so extortionate that it leaves nothing left to run the game.

Which may well be the case - witness the closing of the entire Apex Q/A office a year or two ago. Then the opening of an entirely new office for Apex, presumably a cosmetics factory. Which, if so, would definitely be proof of things going in the wrong direction despite the enormous flood of dollars we provide. Well, I shouldn't say "we" on account of I'm a cheapskate who contributes almost nothing other than my presence.

No, I'm guessing this isn't a money problem. It's either a failure of will, or more likely, just another example of the glacially slow pace of progress in a modern bureaucracy. Now that made me sound like way more of a cynical reactionary than I really am. I blame you, Respawn.
  • I'm going to throw this out there (yes after 4 weeks) on console cheaters where I play the issue of programmable controllers is 2 fold. I am not sure how much the developer can catch that. It seems to me the issue lies squarely on the console makers, i.e. Sony and MS. I don't believe they have that much motivation because I sure they are making royalties on licensing for those controllers. Crack down to hard and the lose that revenue. I certainly isn't make players leave the platforms.

As far as EA and Respawn they just seems unresponsive, as in, they really don't care. They see more profit in events and selling cosmetics. Bilking the kids who swipe mom and dads credit cards. Because lets face it, their the ones buying all this useless swag!

Real issues like the broken sound has not been fixed since day one. I don't even know if Respawn has ever addressed the issue.
