The guy made a mistake, that’s all. He grabbed you banner out of habit. Like you said, y’all were among the last four squads. You were in the points with a chance for more. All it was going to cost you was a few minutes, and you were getting positive RP. 

So why were you quitting at that point? Quitting there means you’d be getting a loss of RP. 

Sure, you couldn’t have been respawned but what the point of ranked if not to gain RP?

Sounds to me like you shouldn’t be playing ranked. The large penalty you got confirms it.
