When I play Light + Heavy I like to carry 240 and 240 (4 stacks)
When I play Light + Light or Heavy + Heavy I carry 300 (5 stacks)
When I play Snipers I take 48 (3 stacks)
Shotgun ammo 32 (2 stacks)
And I never play energy weapons xd

Backpack size really limits things at the beginning of the game, but let's say that's not an issue.
A Wingman can usually go with just one stack. Also a shotgun that's not an EVA with double tap. Having said that, 2 stacks is safest.
Everything else really needs 3 stacks. But that's about the most I use because really the rest needs to be healing, shields and nades.
Same as most here; 180 primary, 120 secondary or sometimes 60 secondary. If shotgun (very early) 2 stacks, energy between 120-240. No sniper... ever. If I do double heavy or light it’s usually 300
5 Stacks primary, 1 Stack secondary never exceeding 300 rounds of any type. Snipers and shotguns I'll generally only keep one stack.
Heavy with light = Heavy 240 - 300 + Light 180 - 240 depending on backpack size
Energy with heavy = energy 300 - 450 + Heavy 180 - 240 depending on backpack size
Shotgun ammo 2 stacks of 16
Sniper ammo 3 stacks of 16
All Heavy = 400
All Light = 400 - 460 sometimes 500 {depending on if I have R-99 or not}
All Energy = 500 - 600 {it's hard to find in later games sometimes}
