It would be something different as you say and most people have at least one friend to grind with.
On top of that like you say you can also play sometimes with a random. One bad random is better than two bad randoms.
The other option you can decide on then is "no fill" and play Solo in Duo ranked since it would not be that huge of a deal. 1v2 is better than 1v3.
@Palette24caratsI guess... stopping people from playing with friends seems pretty draconian. I don't like ranked, I think it's pointless. The only time I bother now is with friends who invite me. I'm not sure how restricting people who play more socially and with friends is a good idea. "No, you can't play with friends because I don't like it" seems pretty weak.
Also playing with randoms is an awful experience. I avoid that at all costs, if that was forced I'd just not play at all.
If you mean a solo's only mode (your intent isn't clear) then that would appeal to a small group of people and make player base smaller than it is now. Maybe as an alternative mode? Certainly not the only one though.

We all should care about others opinions about the game. We do not have to agree with them and surely we do not need to attack them for being honest. That last sentence of yours IMHO was not cool.
