Re: apex legends restarts my pc

Just an update since yesterday for people with the same problem in case this works for them as its worked for me, at least so far anyway with no crashes/restarts

I have a 1440p 75hz monitor and when i play apex at 1440p i get crashes/pc restarts etc, i fixed this by changing in-game resolution to 1920x1080 and i set my fps to 75 (not sure if i needed to set an fps cap, haven't tried without) but seems to work good so far since yesterday with zero crashes so hopefully for people reading this with the same problem this method fixes your issues!

Will post back if it crashes again

@C-Sheldon88 the time bit is interesting. Had a similar problem a while back after a Windows update. It had reset the HD to sleep after 20 min rather than the setting I had put in of HD not sleeping.

To stop the HD from going to sleep, somthing like this:

click on power icon in tray

    Then More Power options.

    In the Control Panel window

select Change Plan settings for your current Power Plan

Then select Change advanced power settings.

In Power Options click the + sign Next to hd.

Under Turn off hard disk after heading, change the value to 0 or never.

Good find, mine was set to 20 min so changed it to never, if that was partly to blame how come it doesn't crash and restart my PC since i've changed the in-game resolution to 1080p from 1440p and setting a fps cap of 75, madness!

I will try my native 1440p resolution again, i also changed PCI Express power management to ''off'' from ''moderate powering saving'', see if that helps with the higher resolution crashes, but it does run perfect in 1080p, i would prefer to run the game at 1440p as the lower res looks like crap! haha

But failing that, at least i can play without issues in 1080p

@C-Sheldon88 I don't understand why the HD shuts off as a power saving measure after 20 minutes when aparrently in use, it may be at that specific point in time everything with a game such as apex is going on in the ram??? And not using the HD.

Finally a discussion that is very similar to what I'm experiencing.

I'm at my wit's end with troubleshooting; basically I'm on a new gaming PC I won and also using an RM850 with the RTX 3090.

I've used DDU to reinstall the graphics drivers, made sure there's no Windows Updates pending, tried on both Steam and Origin etc.

The thing is; I can play the game fine with the RTX 2080 GPU, but not the RTX 3090 GPU.

I also thought the turn off hard disk after 20 mins was a strange setting to have, but last thing I can think of trying is to make sure it's set to 0 mins for all the power plans, as Apex may be switching between those for different GPUs.

There's also the PCI Express > Link State Power Management Setting, which I'll try turning to Off for all the modes also.

Side note; every other game I can play fine with the RTX 3090 GPU, and it's just this game that's crashing.

Here's a photo I managed to grab too when it happened.

@C-Sheldon88Cheers I'll try running at this resolution for a bit also and see if it crashes. It crashed before on Duos so at least I can test on there without losing any Ranked points lol. I'm on a 144hz 2560x1440 monitor.

Let me know how it goes mate, if you use 144hz at 1920x1080 resolution and it crashes try a lower refresh rate at the same resolution

I wish we didn't have to mess about like this though it kinda sucks playing it at 1920x1080 when it looks much better at 2560x1440

@C-Sheldon88I completely agree; I didn't buy this monitor for a lower res & refresh rate haha, but if it works for now it's good I guess!

Is it still stable for you then at 1920x1080? What refresh rate is yours at? Cheers 🙂 I'll be able to test it out tonight after work

Exactly mate.. Yeah it's still fine for me i'm using 1920x1080 with a 75 fps cap (currently my monitor is only 60-75hz until i upgrade to 144hz) i did try the 1920x1080 resolution with no fps cap and it still crashed so i'm forced to set the 75 fps cap

Also i disabled any Freesync for the game so maybe it'll be worth disabling any Gsync you may have etc

Good luck mate and let me know how you get on

@C-Sheldon88 Done some playtesting, so far the FPS limiting seems to be on the right track! You're a lifesaver 🙂 Got to find the sweet spot.

Interesting results; I tested on Duos each time as it doesn't matter if I crash there. Firstly I tried 1920x1080 with no limiting and disabling Gsync which didn't prevent the crashes still, I left Gsync off anyway though just in case.

I limited to 60 FPS and it was stable after that! I then tried 75 FPS, and just tried 100 FPS even and it was still stable.

I'm doing the limiting via Rivatuner instead actually and it does the same job, plus eliminates any screen tearing so it's a generally smoother experience.

I also have the Advanced Performance Monitor enables from Geforce Experience to keep an eye on the GPU temp; Seems that when it reaches 82 degrees or above, that's when it shuts itself off to protect from overheating, which makes me want to try increasing the temp limit here in Afterburner. What do you think?

Anyway; currently the sweet spot is 1920x1080 at 100FPS which is decent. After dinner I'll try upping the FPS to 120 and seeing how that goes, plus with the Afterburner max temp set (I think that's going to be the key thing, because no other game has the card reach that temp; normally it sits in the 70-72 degree range).

I'll keep you updated! Check the screenshots 🙂

    I've cracked it! This was the issue to me, don't know if it applies to your GPU also;

The GPU at stock is set with a temp limit of 83 degrees, so when I was monitoring I noticed the PC crashed when it reached around 82 degrees.

I increased the temperature limit with MSI afterburner in case it gets there again, and also set a custom fan curve so the fans spin higher when the card would reach those temps.

It now sits around a good 75 value and doesn't crash from the temperature limit 🙂

The GPU must have been shutting itself off as soon as it reached the 83 mark, and then Windows followed with suddenly no GPU to work with.

Playing back on 1440p at 144hz and done a few Ranked matches already with no issues!

@C-Sheldon88 Hey, just wondering if you've tried the methods that worked for me?

I usually put my machine to sleep too, and slide the temp limit back, apply, then to the end and apply again, as it doesn't seem to lock in sometimes.

Been playing stable Ranked matches ever since though!

Hi mate sorry i forgot to reply back as i was busy at the time i noticed you had replied before then i got side tracked, that's great that you've nailed the problem i'm glad you've replied again because i never tried this solution!

I'll check my temp limit now and adjust it then load up some Apex, i really hope it works for me too as 1080p looks poor lol

Will report back mate once i've played a couple games etc

    Wish me luck!

    @C-Sheldon88 Sounds good, fingers crossed!

For this month I've been setting the temp limit as above each time and not had issues, though just tonight it did shutdown suddenly; I think it's only because the temp limit isn't sticking sometimes though. Maybe if I do a proper shutdown instead of sleep it will kick in better, but mainly it's a solid fix if it's given me a month of gameplay!

I'm gonna keep doing that till the Devs catch wind of this thread, and work out why their game would cause the 3000 series cards to run so hot lol.

    @Darkness93_yt Hey mate

I went on Afterburner to set my temp limit but it's greyed out like it's off so it must be getting too hot then shutting down like yours was but i can't set a limit because it's greyed out which i can't figure out how to sort it lol,

Wonder if it's a AMD driver thing thats stopping me from setting a temp limit or something?

Surely there's a way i can enable the temp limit section on afterburner, if not then, damn AMD!

@C-Sheldon88 Hey, that's interesting! I suggested the same for my mate who has a laptop with an RTX 2060, but it was also greyed out for him.

I read some forum post that for RTX 2000 cards (or similar) if the temp limit is greyed out, then you can use the Afterburner Beta version. So I'd try with that or EVGA Precision and see if you can get closer, otherwise unfortunately might need to try a different GPU!

@Darkness93_yt Ah, so it's not only AMD cards then.. I'm going to contact MSI to see what they say about it as i can't find a solution online, thanks for the update at least now i know it's not only AMD cards it's happening with, hope yours is still running good with no crashes/freezes etc

Yeah maybe not every model is supported by Afterburner regarding the temp limit / fan curves, would be worth raising a case with them if it's not available in Precision or Afterburner Beta either.

Well funnily enough it has been good for over a month now, but I updated by graphics driver recently and it started again yesterday, so maybe it's related to that?

I'm thinking a fail-safe procedure is something like this:

When a new game driver comes out, DDU should be used in Safe mode to uninstall the current one completely

Then Geforce Experience can be reinstalled, and the new driver along with it.

Also make sure to keep Afterburner & RTSS up to date as there may be something going on there if the Temp Limit isn't kicking in (The Fan curve I never need to reset though, it always seems to work after a restart)

In Afterburner, the usual "Set Temp limit lower, apply, then to the max and apply again" should be done so it "sticks".

At least I've kind of got a process that keeps the game stable, but otherwise I'm directing EA back to this discussion. Even though it's "solved" it's not really, and our comments have been a great overview of the troubleshooting we're doing on our side. Again this only happens with Apex!

@Darkness93_yt Hey mate i tried doing a clean install a bit back and it still happened unfortunately, thanks for posting the link i will check it out right now i've had the game uninstalled as all it does is crash and reboot my PC, i'll go through the link you posted and re-download the game to try any possible fixes etc

@Darkness93_yt Hi mate i think i have a solution, at least for me anyway i got to play a fair few games without any crashing will give it more time to see if it is an actual fix or not but so far so good and i know i would've crashed a few times before doing this.. My GPU has 2 PCI-E slots and i used the single PCI-E cable for the 2 slots on the card, as you can see by the picture the Red line runs from the Green connector and most likely isn't feeding the other slot enough juice when the card needs it which the green line runs direct from the PSU with no break offs so will get the full power, i connected a 2nd PCI-E cable and used the connector on the Green line to plug into the other slot on my card so now i have 2 PCI-E cables connected to both slots that run direct from PSU with no break offs just like the Green line and since doing this Apex has ran great!

So for the 3090 i'd connect one cable per slot on the card using the Green line in the picture to each slot and tuck the Red line away as that's the break off part we don't need, give that a go and try Apex and hopefully it solves it mate

@C-Sheldon88 Hey thanks for the advice, but I'm already running on 2 separate PCI-E cables from the PSU and not using the break-off (it's tucked away like in your pic).

Something else is going on; the issue still only happens with Apex. I've got good traction on the other thread though so I'm seeing what everyone has to say there.

Thanks C-Sheldon88 It worked from me, no crash anymore after 3 year ☹️((( thank you so much.
From C-Sheldon88 's comment I used 2 cable GPU 6+2 pin instead of old setup is 1 cable have 2Port Dual 6+2 pin.

    My spec:
    CPU Threadriper 1950x
    GPU MSI GTX 1080Ti
    32G Ram G.Skill 3000Mhz
    PSU Corsair RM1000X

  • More update, I tried to change Performace and Energy in Win10 Setting from "Best performance" to "Best Energy savings". My Apex game no more crash. I don't know why but let try it if it help to you

  • Finally I found some reason, my last comment you can see I changed performance and energy to "Best Energy savings" or try to use 2 cable PCIE for GPU but my PC still shutdown and restart while I'm playing Apex Legend though other tasks is okay.
I found posts on reddit some one have problem same as me and they told that if your PSU is fine may be PC crashing from your cable Y (PCIE cable for GPU) sometime your cable used long time it will be dirty or rust and it will not supply enough power for GPU.

    So after all I changed:
    - New PCIE cable for GPU and just use only one 6+2 pin cable Y
    - Change other port PCIE connector in PSU (my PSU is corsair RM1000x and I've been using it for 5 years)
It will be no more crash, hope it help to you
