The skins are undoubtedly overpriced because you are donating to a free-to-play game. I have purchased coins to get just one skin a couple times, but then you have extra coins to buy apex packs. During events you can unlock special event items with regular packs sometimes. Yes most people just do their own thing and you end up 2:1 or 3:1, or you go over to help them and they steal kills when you do all the dmg.
