Re: Other games copying Apex

@XxColdFangxX Yeah, that's even worse: Respawn literally has those mechanics in their codes and yet another game will implement them first? Wow.

I'd feel nothing, if a mechanic is good and successful then other games will copy it. It's been always like that in every era of games. Everyone started copying things Call of duty introduced when Call of duty 4 was released, multiple games copied the souls mechanics, and so on.

You know Apex should also copy some things from other games, like audio, game support, matchmaking, skins, if they are good. There's nothing wrong in that.

Nothing wrong no, so long as the game still feels like it's own game and not like a recreation of what it's stealing from.
I don't play titanfall to play apex.
And I don't play apex to play titan fall.
    If that makes any sense.
Honestly in today's world, it's pretty much impossible to not steal from anything. When you think you have an original idea and show it to the world, someone is going to be "Hey that's from *insert ancient game no one has ever heard of here*"

If Fortnight ends up having Titanfall 2 movement I might actually try it.

With all the annoying kids on mute. Forever.

@Cro_Pittt Those mechanics were deliberately left out of Apex because the skill gap from movement was one of the downfalls of Titanfall. It was an accessibility decision.

    @pandareno1999 Skill gap? For Movement?

The Titanfall movement was the most INSTINCTIVE movement of any FPS I have ever played. _And I am terrible at these games._ If I can get it, so can everyone else.
  • @Kyldenar
There are definitely people in titanfall that can utilize that movement better than others.
I enjoyed the movement, but I wasn't the best for sure. Even then the lobbies weren't too terribly matched, most people were around my own skill level with the occasional pro like player that was impossible to get a decent shot on.
If apex implemented that type of movement, with how horrible their match making is, it would be even worse than it is now.
As for fortnite...I really don't see how wall running will work? It's a third person game and their walls aren't exactly long enough for a decent run.
Their lobbies might suffer a little bit at first too between the people who can pick it up easier than those that struggle a bit with such mechanics.

@Kyldenar Didn't you tell us before that you avoided TF2 multiplayer and only played coop? That might account for this opinion.  What's your take on tap strafing in Apex?  Do you find it problematic, or something that ought to be in the game?  That's another movement mechanic that defined good TF2 players.

The funny thing is that, despite the earlier design philosophy of trying to avoid having too high a skill floor, that's exactly what has occurred with Apex over the years.  I think pretty much everyone agrees that the new user experience in Apex kind of sucks because of skill gap.

@pandareno1999 I prefered the Frontier Defense co-op yes, but when I couldn't find a match of that and needed to scratch the itch, PvP it was.

I did... just ok. It's not near as bad as a BR because at least the teams are evenly matched. Oddly, my biggest problem was using the Titan enough (when it was available). I have the same problem in Apex of holding on to my ult for "just the right moment" too.

As for tap strafing, if you can pull it off, whatever. Honestly, I have seen very little of it. Most times I am lasered by an R-301 in the head long before I am close enough where tap strafing would matter.

I'll never be doing it because I am a controller player from the carpal tunnel. If anything, people being able to do the loot box shuffle angers me more than tap strafing. Make everyone sit still and take that risk to loot a box!

@Kyldenar Hey man, I feel badly for coming off as argumentative about this, and I appreciate your thoughtful reply. I was just interested to explain that when Apex was made, a deliberate attempt was made to make the skill floor not be too high in the game. As the devs put it (paraphrased), they didn't want advanced movement techs to become commonly needed by players in order to compete. Thus the removal of some of TF2 movement mechanics. A tangible example I can point to was the removal of b-hop healing fairly early in Apex' life. There are dev interviews talking about this stuff.

Anyway, I think it would be fun to be able to do these things, but they would make the gaming experience for less skilled players even more miserable than it already is. Would I enjoy the game as much if people were constantly breaking my neck with wild movement tech? Maybe, but I don't thing I would. Sort of "be careful what you wish for," I guess was my message. Cheers!

@Kyldenar  If you want to see some amazing TF2 multiplayer gameplay, I highly recommend checking out https://www.twitch.tv/iniquity.  He doesn't stream very often but I checked and he does seem to keep some vods.  From the titles, I'm not sure what kind of gameplay he has saved there - maybe it could actually be campaign stuff, I dunno.  Hopefully they're from his regular stream.  His play is pretty nutty (on controller) and he has what I think is a very entertaining personality.  Let me know what you think.

@pandareno1999 No problem, it's a fair question. I have clearly expressed a preference for the Frontier Defense format. It was less clear that I at least dabbled in the PvP formats too.
