Return to solo queue - a simple lesson learned

Anyone who has cared enough to read my posts probably knows that I decided to stop queuing solo in the game a few seasons ago.  Well, I have made a somewhat surprising return to solo q.  Scheduling with my buds has become more difficult, and my one main mate is pretty much taking the season off.

My message is simple.  Solo queue in my opinion is so much better in duos, for a variety of reasons.  I never solo queued duos before, but on advice from my mate I have been doing so for the last couple of days, and I'm finding the results FAR more tolerable.  My primary reasons are that 1) your team mate is much less inclined to leave when they get knocked, and  2) it is much, much easier to get on the same page with only one random instead of two.  I might elaborate a bit more if there is interest in this conversation.  For now I'm just expressing happiness at finding a tolerable way to play this game solo queue.

  • @pandareno1999 I haven't tried duos in a long time. My previous experience was it was the sweatiest mode there is so I avoiding it. Now with trios becoming that it might not hurt to try it again.

@hayhor Duos is a very fun mode, it allows you and your teammate to communicate clearly, you don’t need to dibs anything so that a 3rd won’t take it. You can even select no fill and challenge yourself a little, while not having to face a 3 stack.

@hayhor  I've played plenty of duos in my time, but always as a premade.  I've played a few hours now solo over two days, and it doesn't seem quite as sweaty as when I play with my bud.  Pretty much the same as I find in trios solo vs. premade.  I'm sure it depends to an extent on which sort MMR of lobbies the matchmaker puts you in.  I feel like I'm in the "mid-tier" when I play solo, so I don't get the Masters-stacked players so much.

@BigMacAttack8u I used to no fill duos a good amount. It was harder than trios due to really good duos never leaving each other's side.
  • I feel they should just go ahead and put in a solo mode. Lot of people would prefer to play this game solo then teaming up with randoms who instantly rq after they get knocked. I'm aware they want the game to be based off of working together, im just saying tho.

  • @pandareno1999 I have to agree. Personally, duos has always been my favorite mode, whether I'm solo or have a buddy with me. Particularly when solo, though, I find it to be much easier. I'm not going to win very many 1v3's, but I can usually hold my own 1v2. Even if I get a random that doesn't know what they're doing, I still have a decent shot at winning the match. I almost never solo-queue trios.

I really wish there was a ranked duos playlist, now that my two daily buddies don't play much Apex anymore. I prefer to play ranked, but it's hard to be motivated to do so, knowing that I have to rely on randoms, Lol
  • @pandareno1999 I tried duos this weekend solo. Same experience as before. Lobbies full of sweaty duos holding hands while my decent skilled teammate tries to 1v2 every team with no communication. I find it harder because of the good duos that are hand holding.
  • So, something I've been doing a lot this week is solo queuing duos in party with my best friend.  We don't queue together a lot because his MMR is in the Big Boys lobbies, and I can easily tank my stats pretty badly doing so. I know stats don't really matter, but I'm in a place right now with this game where I've improved quite a lot, but not enough to be very successful in those lobbies.  I have set a goal for myself in the last couple of seasons, and finally have achieved it.  We'll see if I can maintain it until the season's end.  I just have to play enough to collect seven more BP levels.  I play regularly with a couple buddies who are at around my skill level, and then I do these solo q duos games.

What we've been doing is using PS5's screen share option.  I'll play for a while with his helpful input, and then we swap.  Even though he's a lot better than I am, I'm experienced enough to spot out a couple of comments there and there that he finds useful.  I can also ask questions about decisions he makes in real time, which is far more helpful than simply watching someone play.  If you have a friend with a large skill gap, I suggest giving this a try.  Afterward. we may queue together for a while with me playing on an alt account, so we don't have to worry about my hard-earned stat increases dwindling away when games don't go so well.
