That sounds like a typical arena shooter pro who wants to dismiss a more complex game because his skill set consists primarily of aiming and not of thinking about ways to mitigate the role of luck. Guess it all depends on your definition of the word "competitive."

@reconzero you know who Shroud is, right? He does play BR's. Honestly, I agree with what and why he is saying that. There is a lot of RNG involved in BR's, which doesn't make the game truly competitive.

If I remember right, he made his name in Counter Strike. Sure he plays battle royale, but the arena shooter mindset is a hard thing to shake.

There is more rng involved for some players than for others. Most players take rng as a given, a fixed and immutable feature of the game. And it isn't. I think the players who figure this out win more. I call that the opposite of luck.

As for the definition of "competitive," if most of the players with high win rates believe that they're just lucky then they would quickly leave this "uncompetitive" game. They don't because it isn't. It's a broader use of the word, but to my mind that makes the game more competitive, not less. Semantics.

  @reconzero Competition is generally activities where participants compete on an even playing field, to show their own strengths. Rng is a chance that can either be an advantage or disadvantage, and there's plenty of it in BR's. You can be the best team and still lose because of bad rng.
  
  Shroud isn't just a CS player, the guy is a legend in CS. One of, if not, the best player ever. Not just because of his gun skills, but his game IQ.

    This is true of any specific match. But in aggregate it is not true or otherwise everyone would win exactly 5% of their matches. And we know that isn't how this game works at all. Luck is a factor, but it is hardly the only factor. There are ways to minimize luck, and the ability to do that is a skill set. Just not one that aim gods want to talk about. Which is fine. They can use the word "uncompetitive" to describe what they're not good at and that's okay. As long the rest of us can acknowledge that attitude for what it is.

@swift07Greater skill over time will provide long term positive results, if one is better than their opponents. Every action can be calculated very precisely to almost solving the game, almost. That would be extremely burdensome for the average user. RNG is only relevant in a single match and since it exists as a rule in the arena for all players, it has no weight on long term success.

  @RaisinFlakes Yes, over time a better player will have better results. My point is...there's a good amount of rng involved in BR's. It could be off drop with weapons and items, movement of the circle, 3rd parties, and a lot of other things. It might make the match easier or more difficult. Competition in general, not just speaking of video games, are done with 2 or more individuals/teams with the same playing field, without rng built into the activity. You look at sports, there's no object involved that can produce multiple outcomes.

    @swift07 As we see in a sports season, multiple bouts determine the champion. Apex Legends does this too. As long as rng is rng, being fair in its truest form, then it is fair for all. No one team can cheat the rng. It's not chess, I agree, but it is fair.
