SBMM. Improve it or get rid??

I'm not sure SBMM works properly. It seems to me that there are 3 tiers. One for low level and new players. Another for pro's and one inbetween that has a bit of both as well.

Now I'm an average player and I'm fairly good at shooters and always have a positive k/d ratio but in this game I really struggle. My k/d is 0.9 and it seems that most players I come across are better than me.

Now I don't think SBMM is working very well and I'm not sure what would be better. Improving it or getting rid of it all together?

I'm not saying I want to be dominating every game I play but most days I can go 10-20 games with only getting a few kills and it takes a few days before I have a good game and get 5-6 kills. I would like to have a bit more consistency and not get destroyed most of the time.

I really enjoy this game but it is very frustrating most of the time. Anyway rant over!

  • @Marge010 I think it's fine as is.

If you run up against a wall in terms of how many kills your able to get, there are two ways of correcting that. 1.) The game gives you weaker enemies, or 2.) You raise your own skill ceiling to remain competitive.

I prefer the latter route. One of the things that draws me to Apex personally is the level of intensity and competitive nature that isn't present in other BR games.
  • @Marge010I just don’t think it works atall haha. My KD is 2.4 and I still get teammates that are level 5 as well as full pre made squads of predators in the same match.

So just feels random to me tbh, dont think it needs adjusting . don’t see how it could be skill based anyway when I get everyone from level 5- 500 in my matches regardless of my KD or if I’ve just won or lost etc.

  • I'd say to not worry too much about your K/D ratio, it's not a great measure (though I'm not saying it ISN'T a measure of skill) of how good you are at this game. Really skilled players have decent K/D ratios, but their real skill comes from their own knowledge and experience. Practicing your aiming, snapping, and tracking skills is important, knowing when to push and when to retreat is important, your movement and how fast you loot is important, etc. etc.

That being said, I'd rather remove SBMM. From my experience, it just doesn't work for me in a squad based shooter. Rarely I'd be matched with people who are actually on par / better than me, yet always matched against people who are actually good at the game. I'd rather have SBMM in a solo mode rather than squads, who doesn't love a good challenge?

  • @pastaclown  I think that's  certainly everybodies major gripe. For instance what statistics is sbmm using to stick players under level 50 and predators together in the same lobby?  The skill gap is vast...doesn't  seem very balanced to me.

@MandatoryIDtag the day I quit playing my very last match I got a level 5 and someone who hadn't played since Season 2. My man was level 45 rocking a Season 2 Pass level 1 badge. You gotta love it.

  • It should be called (SBSB) Skill Based Server Balancing.

Players - SBMM isn't working as intended with preds and sub level 100 together.

EA official statement - We have had SBMM since launch and it increases player retention.

Voice actor on couch after few beers - SBMM doesn't exist.

On this rare occasion my money is on the drunk guy.

  • @Marge010 KD is not a good measure on this game as you can die once and likely be going into another game. Plus the way kills register is strange as you can fire the last bullet into someone and get the kill.

The real measure is wins and only wins I think. I used to think top 5s meant something but then I realized I could probably solid snake by myself and likely get top 5s almost every game. At least when you get a win you usually have to fight at the end.

For me the matchmaking seems to work as I get a wide variety of teammates and enemies.

@pastaclown This is funny. The other day I got hooked up with a guy who asked how to play as he hadnt played since season 1. He actually wanted to know of changes as he quickly remembered how to play. He actually played pretty well and we won the game. 🤣
